Ok, what #browser alternatives are out there?

currently I'm using #Firefox (despite Mozilla), but it is slow and seems to go down the AI drain.

#Chrome is out (don't need even worse spyware).

My requirements would be
- (Arch)Linux, Windows is optional
- Fast rendering
- Working AdBlocker!
- No phoning home
- Not run by racist/transphobic assholes!
- Regular security updates

Am I looking for Unobtainium here?

@dec_hl
This will be difficult, as all alternatives use the Chrome Engine, aka Chromium, as their basis.
AFAIK there are currently only 3 render engines: iOS (Safari), Firefox, Chromium
@bodsch I'm not opposed to the rendering engines, just the anti-features they build around it...
@dec_hl
On Linux I use Chromium, Falkon, Vivaldi and Firefox.
Falkon & Vivaldi are quite usable.
Maybe you can take a look at Opera again?
@bodsch didn't Opera route web traffic over their servers, too? I remember stuff like that.
There was a "recent" outcry of some sort attached to Opera I'm sure...
@dec_hl i know one but doesn't comply with last point (updates)…
@dec_hl and doesn't js (both pro and con)
@hacknorris well, cope with "modern websites" is a req I forgot. I know about dillo and friends... 😩
@dec_hl i thought more of lynx xD
@hacknorris well, there is Arachne, too 🤣
@dec_hl you have only two options: chrome based, which means no AdBlocking extensions, or Firefox, which means gecko engine. Firefox is not bad, except for YouTube. But that's google making it slow on purpose for non-Chrome. It can be improved with user agent spoofing extensions.
@dec_hl some Firefox alternatives are Librewolf, Waterfox, Zen, Cachy browser from CachyOS.
@dec_hl I use Vivaldi browser. While a Chromium fork, the devs have done a lot as far as privacy controls and ad blocking (my uBlock Origin extension works fine in it). And it does NOT phone home.

Vivaldi Browser

@dec_hl I tried a few alternatives lately (mostly forks of Firefox, the Google shit is too deeply ingrained in any of the chromium based alternatives) and they were all worse in terms of basic functionality (getting shit done).

So I'm back to Firefox as the least worst option (disabling stuff I don't want and making sure it doesn't re-enable itself after an update). If they ever make it impossible to disable stuff then I may accept I have no choice but to jump ship.

@dec_hl I honestly have no idea how non-tech-savvy people get anything done. The amount of shit you have to disable to get to a usable state on a modern computer is staggering.

Even on my work computer, IT once complained that I had installed a non-approved program, it was ExplorerPatcher. I replied that if they insisted I use Windows 11, this was required to make it usable in my day-to-day work. They didn't reply back after that...

@dec_hl You're most probably looking for @Vivaldi. Sure, it's still "only" Chromium in a trenchcoat, but it's clearly the best of the bunch.
@dec_hl theres #LibreWolf and #Mullvad browsers as alternatives.
@dec_hl I've been using Vivaldi and other than being Chromium based I think it checks off most of your other checkboxes. Also has a solid fediverse presence.

@dec_hl there's limited choice in browser engines. Most aal are chrome and gecko based. Alternatives are being developed though with Servo https://servo.org/ and Ladybird https://ladybird.org/. These are not mature enough though for regular usage. You could check https://alternativeto.net/ for various alternative browsers using the mainstream chrome and gecko engines.

#ladybird #servo #browser

Servo aims to empower developers with a lightweight, high-performance alternative for embedding web technologies in applications.

Servo is a web rendering engine written in Rust, with WebGL and WebGPU support, and adaptable to desktop, mobile, and embedded applications.

Servo
@brownhamer seems like ladybird does not comply with the second to last req anymore...

@dec_hl there are lots of Chrome and Firefox forks that remove the crap. None of them are clear winners with critical mass at this time, so you'll want to survey them yourself and see which - if any - fit your needs.

Edit: For what it's worth, I'm currently using Firefox fork Floorp on Windows, and it seems decent.

@dec_hl
Only for mobile so far (and I have no idea what engine it uses), but if it ever supports desktop the duckduckgo browser has been very usable for me.
@dec_hl Waterfox seems to be a decently deshittified Firefox fork. But you be the judge.
@dec_hl i would recommend #vivaldi great features, ad blocking and privacy, good devs, it’s my daily browser. It’s chromium based. If you want Firefox based then I would suggest checking out Zen browser.
@dec_hl Hiya! Arch Linux here as well. I've been using Librewolf (FF fork) for years and I love it. The Arch AUR build is pretty stripped down but you can tweak it just like Firefox to suit your needs (which may affect security and privacy of course). There's a Windows (🤮) build as well if you need to go the Microsuck way, 😉.

@dec_hl Unless you're willing to make do with forks of the former with more or less the same problems.. basically unobtanium yes. You could try something like Zen browser (haven't tried myself but heard others like it), but that's a Firefox fork, so if Firefox truly goes down the drain, so does it, too.

I personally don't find Firefox slow though honestly, except maybe if you're browsing websites like Youtube that insert sleep cycles to make Firefox appear slow- try spoofing your user agent :P

@dec_hl
I would at this point present Pale Moon to the jury, which uses the old Gecko (now Goanna) engine...

It probably fail one of the points though not sure which one.

@dec_hl There is so sooooooooo much bullshit, #FUD & outright lies being spread about #Firefox lately. Don't want #AI in it? Fine, simply keep the setting disabled [as i do]. Don't want to be involved in the weirdarse ads thing mozilla did a few months ago? Fine, also keep that setting disabled [as i do]. Maybe Firefox will cease to be if gargle is forced to stop funding Firefox Search? Ok, if/when that happens, it would be time to find another browser, but it has not happened yet & might not happen at all, so running away screaming with hands waving in the air now, as many seem to advocate, is stupid.

My daily browsing experience continues to be magnificent with  #FirefoxNightly + #Sidebery + #uBlockOrigin + #FirefoxSecondSidebar [for #WebPanels].

 #Floorp 11 was nice to use for a while, but its replacement 12 is months late with minimal public info easily found.

 #ZenBrowser recently progressed from Alpha to Beta status, but i stopped using it several weeks ago in frustration at the wild swings in browser design the Dev keeps trying. Certainly though it will be worthwhile revisiting once it reaches Stable phase.

Personally i will never ever use Chrome under any circumstances, only occasionally launch Chromium under sufferance, abandoned Vivaldi a couple of years ago, & also dislike Brave... so if the day does ever arise when FF is no more, the remaining choice will be odious indeed.

@MsDropbear42 @dec_hl people just love to hate mozilla. No matter what they do,or don't do. They are easy target. Yet somehow going through settings seems to be an unthinkable task.
All mozilla is doing is trying to stay afloat. All those "controversial" features are easy to disable.
I managed to convince all people around me to switch for FF. The benefits are impossible to ignore
@dec_hl another vote for Vivaldi. I'm really impressed with it. Having been a long-term Firefox user. I think it meets all your criteria?
I also use it on Android but the mobile version doesn't have an ad blocker - luckily my VPN handles that anyway.
