Really, to hell with fireworks. šŸ‰
@gedeonm they added fireworks coming down from drones later too, crazy stuff EDIT: not really, the video I mention is a mix of two different videos overlapped

@gedeonm

Indeed… wow…!

@gedeonm Yes! When I see fireworks now I think ā€œgee you’re stuck in the past. And thanks for all the heavy metals that will go into my lungs and waterā€.
@arroz @gedeonm not to mention all the traumatised Humans and Animals, it really felt like being under bombardment last night in London.
For me it was thrilling, but I could easily see how it could not be fun. šŸ˜ž
@gedeonm that’s quite stunning. Noisy I bet too with the thousands of propellers buzzing away ;)
@simonharper @gedeonm There an interesting question: what's the noise impact of a thousand small drones compared to fireworks? One hypothesis I have is that fewer dogs and cats are freaking out by the sounds of a thousand small propellers but definitely worth looking into.
[4K Korea] Gwangalli Drone Show, which is held every Saturday evenin

YouTube
@fernsehchat @starluna @simonharper That’s so cool and totally impressive.
@fernsehchat @starluna @gedeonm Indeed not! For major commercial displays this makes total sense. For people at their one home, I guess we have to have banging fireworks and all the dangers.
@fernsehchat @starluna @simonharper @gedeonm saw a drone show in Dubai a few years ago. Amazing
@starluna @simonharper Yeah unless you experience one in person there’s no way to know. The distance of these drones is significant however so I doubt there a ton of noise unless you are directly under them. I’m also confident that drone makers could eventually make their drones nearly silent unlike fireworks which are basically explosions. No doubt however this is why most drone displays are accompanied by loud music to help mask the propeller sounds.
@gedeonm @simonharper Thank you. I've never been to a drone show. There was a serious accident at one in FL recently, so I might just stick to watching them on YouTube for a bit. But I suspect that they would be an improvement over fireworks in a lot of ways, acoustically and environmentally.

@starluna @simonharper @gedeonm
It's a question of training and experience with fireworks when it comes to pets, I guess.

Our Labrador slept this night very well during the fireworks, and obviously dreamt about running and hunting. At midnight, both the dogs were with us on our terrace while we sipped the Champagne.

But funny, we had such a strong fog this year, that actually at midnight proper almost nobody fired much (by sound, it wasn't much visible anyway).

@yacc143 @starluna @gedeonm Training can work to an extent, but collies are particularly susceptible to stress and anxiety. Our last dog was terrified also (collie lurcher), but our terriers didn’t give a hoot at all.
@simonharper
Well our Labrador is rather curious, when I was walking her in the evening, off the leash, and in front of the neighbouring house a number of bigger groupings were firing fireworks and while I kept a distance our supersized Chi was totally confident in exploring all these interesting humans. Had to call her back and leash her.
@starluna @gedeonm
@yacc143 @starluna @gedeonm that’s great. We have friends with German Shepards and they howl to go and watch the fireworks 🤣
@simonharper Perhaps but I doubt more noisy than dozens (sometimes hundreds) of loud booms.
@gedeonm true. One of our collies was terrified last night. The other was totally unconcerned. Drones maybe not as alarming?
@simonharper @gedeonm yeah much louder than those famously quiet fireworks...

@simonharper

Not even on the same level as screaming rockets and exploding mortars, I presume.

@gedeonm

@gedeonm

These are #Drones, not #Fireworks - Looks #amazing !

@antonproitzelhaimer Yes. I’m saying we should get rid of fireworks and use drones. Much more visually impressive and less stressful noise wise.

@gedeonm

Okay - This makes Sense. šŸ‘

@gedeonm

Where was this show? Impressive!

@lf_araujo Shanghai, China but it was from this past summer, not part of New Years.
@gedeonm that is quite stunning!
@Thebratdragon Even though the video is sped up it’s still amazing and technologically impressive.
@gedeonm Ja, done with fireworks. Go for a VLAN at the congress and off we go!

@gedeonm still no laser beams on the formation flying drones?
@gedeonm @benjohn That’s next, but the power required for bright enough lasers might be difficult, and shining high power lasers down on people might be problematic.

@gedeonm I was watching a stream of the ball drop in New York, and I was constantly distracted by the barrage of Coka-Cola and movie advertisements surrounding the whole event.

Yes, its "tradition", but this drone display is much cooler.

@gedeonm I wish I had only a tenth of these instead of having to use the more primitive methods of getting fancy lights into the night sky after the calendar rollover.

Note: I’m fully aware that ā€œfancy lightsā€ absolutely isn’t a neccessity … that’s just me enjoying that this is possible once a year. (and yes I clean up after my and my neighbors firework)

@gedeonm It is amazing. And I somehow still find fireworks more wonderful!

@gedeonm this fake is interesting. Apparently it came from a real drone show but was sped up and placed on a different background to look more impressive and hide the timelapse

@tubbdoose Its not fake, its a real display. Yes it’s sped up, you can tell by the planes landing in the background super quickly but the environment hardly matters.
@gedeonm the video is sped up by the company that sells the drones for advertising. I can’t slow it down enough on youtube to see it at actual speed but even at 0.25x it is (at least in my opinion) much much less impressive. https://youtu.be/pZ-zJ0Vq0FU
Flying Dragon in the Sky --1500 Drones

YouTube
@gedeonm beautiful 🤩 šŸ‰
@gedeonm i get Spider-Man long way home vibes
@gedeonm thanks for the post and dogs around the world will greatly appreciate this change, too.
@gedeonm Oooh, drones. Now this is pretty.

Wouldn't have worked here though... it was
very windy during this new year's eve.

@gedeonm Impressive, but somehow it appears that your video file is broken. Do you have a better version of the video somewhere?

Edith: Found a better version. But I'd still be interested in a full-length video. This is just 20 seconds.

@gedeonm depends what the relief is about: quality of display (ā“), minimised disruption to animals āœ…, or environment impact āŒ
@gedeonm @emilvolk now I’m imagining fireworks recreated with drones.
They can move pretty fast! But maybe not the ones for shows.
Pair of Florida tourist spots pause drone shows after holiday accident injures boy | CBC News

A theme park resort and a huge hotel in central Florida have either stopped using drones or cancelled their drone-based shows after several drones collided and fell from the sky during a separate holiday celebration in downtown Orlando. The accident on Saturday injured a boy who required surgery.

CBC
@fartnuggets Yep, most things do. I wonder how many bystanders have been killed or maimed by errant fireworks over the years.
@gedeonm @fartnuggets
Just reading that at least 2 people died in the Netherlands in the past day from errant fireworks...

@gedeonm apparently this is more than 15 years old

@tommy This technology didn’t exist 15 years ago. It’s from June 2024, year of the dragon.
@gedeonm weird, my app displayed october 2009. Now itnis June 2023🤷
@gedeonm Oh yes! This is so much better and way cooler.
@gedeonm lol these edits, ONE of these place names will be correct xD
@colinstu Third time’s a charm!!
@gedeonm I was gonna say that too but didn't wanna jinx it!
@gedeonm Drones. I’d rather see something like this to be honest.
