Civilian: your Holo, a backpack, interspecies travel Pharmacy.
There are 72 species in the Union and their home planets/colonies, if they are not outright intoxicating to your species, they can start allergic reactions, you may not stand their food. Believe me travel diarrhea is even worse if your body waste could kill an alien ecosystem.

Holo are like mobile phones today, if you add all your IDs, licenses, a local cluster communication device, environmental scanner, micro forge and and Swiss army tool box into it. So yeah you should keep it on you.

If alarm goes of follow the people to the nearest shelters. Police service forces take the lead.

If people are around, that have scales that are referd to as Talithi/Talith, wear your mask, that is provided in your travel Pharmacy.
They are our closest allies we had & have. They breath in Carbon dioxide & breath out Oxygen, however we are both intoxicating to each other, thanks to nanoparticles we breath out. It's a code of conduct. Other species don't struggle with that but we do.

If you behave inappropriate, people will most likely correct you, in a friendly manor & openly communicate missteps, this serves the purpose of handling complex social differences in the most efficient way. No bad blood as long everyone is nice.

Ash & Kira. Not to a 100% but Ash now knows most of Kira's Memories while Kira can access all of Ashlei's Data & Memory banks. Thanks to that Ash improved the Strawberries from the EPI, mad the light on board more natural & has the knowledge how menstrual pain feels like. The catch for Ash is that she needs to regulate Data flow from Kira to herself otherwise the cheer amount of Data & it's structure may over stress her ability to handle it, in addition to keep the ship running smoothly.
Kira is, in theory able to control the ship via her thoughts, if Ash would allow it. Both agree that it is better to keep this a secret from the crew until Kira has prepared them enough, even Arkham doesn't know the full scale.

2/2 to the "new resource." It has begun to incorporate Ash's sensor readings into Kira's body feeling. As an example if the Ghoz'Tarc's engine vibrates incorrectly Kira feels an itch at her leg. For that reason Ash has created an buffer instance that regulates Kira's instinctive reflex driven attempts to enter the system and Kira's knowingly requests and the answers to them.

I haven't described any scent or smell in particular but it's a dusk scene on a local Alliance Campus.
Especially in the local canteen. So the scent of the night strengthens as the day passes. Together with different food types, the scent of clean human and alien adolescents (no "service" without "shower" after the last training), sparkling water, hot chocolate and scratched ceramics as Anika almost cracked her cup of hot chocolate in anger.

The temperature drop, day night shift is quite drastic we talk about 5-15° Celsius in general.

The change in the smell. Thanks to the drop in temperature, night bloomers open up while day bloomers close, etc Terran night has a different smell than day.

How many others are truly around, all their noises are usually reduced to a background soundscape but if listen closely, you can make out single voices, like the gutteral & rough Somehar, the slight, roaring hissing Talithi, Bethosians Melodic patterns & tonal shifts, an Asza'ni talking mother tongue with a Trellwa'ni, same language different vibes, Asza'ni more sung, Trellwa'ni more screeching, the room has at least 30 people of different origin in it right now.

Inhumane Stories, stories from the eyes of an non human like entity, dirty ones, rollercoaster ones that punch your guts between joy and despair. What ever story seems to tickle me fancy. But for all time I prefer unfinished ones. Open ends. Because as long time goes on this stories will mix into others like the history of a family which each child a new story begins. I would love to tell a lovecraftian romance in a similar way Terry Pratchett told fantasy. A post Apocalypse in a way Edgar Allan Poe told it's tell tale heart. It depends on which occasion and plan this happens.
A romantic Picnic?
Kira would bring Arkham and her possible other partners.
J. Talissa and Rose would be invited to. Kira was in a relationship with Rose and Talisa in her teenage years and she doesn't mind showing emotions around them. If any she might be even more relaxed knowing she is with friends who know her.
Since Ashlei has become part of Kira & vice versa they would bring her in somehow. I pointed that out in a German answer lately, bringing a warship with you is kinda difficult.

For a professional picnic it would be the whole crew & maybe some brass that Kira knows well, affiliated folks that helped in the past.

Food: whatever one wants, the enzyme printer is well programmed.
Maybe some nature grown food after all it's an special occasion.

Hm birthday celebrations are common in my universe and so is Union Founding. So anti birthday seems easy, instead of a cake and a nice meal the food contains entirely out of emergency rations and the horrible survival chocolate. No matter the universe or time an equivalent of this stuff seems to exist everywhere. Stuff that make you survive but question if you really want to eat it.
Most people will have an angry hang over attitude, no one's talking.

A one day thing where everyone has to do their paperwork. Like US Taxes are portrait in media. Everyone is unnerved by the circumstances and of course it's cold raining outside.

Birthdays are very similar to our times for some species it's more accurate calling it Hatchingday and for some even Sproutingday.
It's a celebration in which the general consensus is to thank the parents (if the emotional connection to them is "good") but it's also normal to just let that slip (it's an ongoing discussion in the society).
Than everyone does relaxing stuff, joyful stuff. Terrans still love a celebration with friends, family members or whoever is around and wants to enjoy with them. Talith have taken a very similar approach and well a lot of cross Spezies cobtermination Hangover or problems stem from drunken Talithi and Terrans getting boozed up even more because they didn't used masks or deactivated the filtration.

Union Founding has become the biggest celebration inside the Union and even some Rimworlds celebrate them, which is

2/2 kinda complicated in terms of politics "inside" the Rim.
For our average citizens the 6 days are a flurry of colors, it's a quite fast celebration that, on a street levels would look a lot like a themed costume festival in which every day has another topic.
On bigger worlds the cities are filled with market stands that praise their foods & jewelry, music, fabrics, crafts, arts.
Students get a vacation to join the celebration. Parades take place. Every day focused on one core member of the Union. Especially dedicated people even speak the standard language of that days member, or at least try it. Some associated member worlds also started celebrating this by adding their own culture to it, which makes the inofficial festival even more of a flurry, now ~13 days long. The celebration isn't set on a date, but it is rolled around & sometimes dependent on the planet that holds the main celebration.

15.12.2024 Do your characters give gifts to others for no reason or only on special occasions?

Birthdays are a special occasion but generally people give smaller mostly digital gifts at least in the military. Kira has a house which is a bit extraordinary. Not that people can't afford them but most military folks only rent apartments in between missions. Because of that their physical possessions are more likely sparse, houses only start getting a thing later or if a family is planned.
Still Kira prefers smaller subtle gifts on occasion. She folds origami figures, something she learned from Anika as a child & she can bring up quite impressive variations. Only problem is physical paper, if she folds an Origami figure she often ada a text to it, a letter, etc, digital mix tapes are also a thing but don't ask anyone what the Tape part means they assume it has something to do with the icon 📼you know like that ancient 3D printed icon of saving.💾

Charity is not necessary on Core worlds thanks to everyone having a ground income plus on top what they work for and the fact that being rich is frowned upon, redistribution of wealth over a certain level and money that looses its value completely once a year.
On associated worlds they work towards the same goals so most charity goes there or cooperate participate Worlds in the Rim.
And yes almost the whole crew does a bit to support certain endeavors for ironing out the unfair distribution of wealth that is unnecessary in the 24. Century in a multinational bond.

17.12.2024 Has your MC ever given a gift to a stranger? If not, what could it be?

The gift of saving someones life, at least 20 people for sure, the gift of supporting a stranger or lighten up their day, can't count.
Physical gifts on occasion like buying a random child on a Rim world something to eat, give them closing. Care is a central theme in the Union. A bond of 72 species scattered around the known galaxy doesn't work without compassion. Care is an obvious way of showing it. The only problem with the gifts for strangers is that "the rules of gifting" state that a gift should rather be useful, emotionally valuable or delightful (which in itself is an emotional value) a stranger wouldn't need anything that reminds them to the gifting Person.
So it happens rather rarely. Lifting a person from a Rim world could be seen as such especially because ether Union treats them as equals but leaving their families & known life behind is hard.

18.12.2024 A stranger gives your SC their dream gift, what is it & how does your SC react?

The problem with gifts for most of my SC is that they all come from a collection of very similar societies, are in the same boat (ship) & have similar views about gifts.

So for this I switch to the backround SC Somwhar Ovate R'Einbo. Ovate is a Somwhar musician who lives on Terra. He makes Reggae inspired music, loves bad jokes, puns, music & Terran cats. Somwhar themself are a feline looking species of warriors & hunters. Ovate sticks out of this bunch pretty drastically.* No "true Somwhar" would ever want to be seen with a Terran cat or acknowledge their existence. Ovate on the other hand loves them & loves to freak out strangers. So whoever would gift him a physical media with Bob Marley's Complete Discography & Remixes would be "paid" with a 110Kg, 199cm, bipedal tailless, catlike person, sitting on their lap "purring."

* one of the first things Ovate learned was about Red/Orange cats being "special" and since he has reddish orange fur himself he just "claimed" this trait for himself. He doesn't care that others find him kinda speciest in the portrayal of his species as a giant Terran house cat... His argument is that by being the seemingly only one doing it it can't be seen as a bad representation but is indeed a bolt move to be different.
On Terra he is a welcomed guest on musical related topics and he even has some Terra living Somwhar that like him for being so weird. Most of them wouldn't be so open on Khalit the homeworld of the Somwhar. It's a bit like people moving to another city to follow their interests without judgement. Well only on a galaxy wide level.

Most likely one of the Unions Brass Celebrations, since Kira's official Rank & assignment are on the Phoenix, the Unions ambassador & flagship as Commander of the Council guard, she would be expected to attend official Council meetings & celebrations, if not on mission, this is part of her daily job routine. Thankfully the Phoenix is a city in space & space is vast. The Ghoz'Tarc is a support ship of the Phoenix & it's not uncommon for the guards to act on behalf of the council fleet & secure the fleet or replenish certain goods.

So if she attended it would be gala uniform, full brass medal portrait, shiny boots + Union, Alliance & Unit heraldry, same would go for XO Troika, XO Jenkins & the Flightcommander Abbishek "Arkham" Pakthi.

Not really, in Universe, my next work I plan on working, exists as a serious and hilariously bad Science Fiction series/work and I contributed it to a close friend of my as the Author. Kira:s mother is basically the ~10 generation of my friends brothers child (she doesn't want kids her own and he seems interested in having his own so yeah it's the biggest pun/easteregg/reference I made and it's canon for quite some time now) thats where her last name comes from and her first name xones from Star Trek Deep Space Nines character Major Kira Nerys of the Bajoran military. Basically Kira is her last name and Needs her first name because Bajorans donut this way but most people in universe aren't that big of Star Trek fans while it just simply runs in Kira Knox's Family to like Star Trek (as it does in my friends family).

Ashlei had other versions of her Name like Aschlei, Ashley, Ashleygh, Ashlai, Ash-Slai. And at least a dozen more and the name shouldn't be taken as any hint on her real technology working behind her personality.

Arkham has her name for a simple reason, her recruiter for the alliance thought that she was utterly mad but highly skilled, he was a big fan of the Arkham Knight, a 2280 NIN version of Batman based on an age old video game. Also the our world meaning or Arkham is another multi layered reference package and maybe Arkham is the reincarnation of the Location or Arkham from the Cthulhu Mythos maybe I give her a sister named Miskatonic or Katonic will become her mother's Surname. 🤪

22.12,2025 Do your characters ever stargaze?

Rarely, space and stars hit differently if you travel and live between them. The sad truth is there is no great bear, no archer, etc. This are only in line from Terra and Sol's Planets.

So everything looks different from what you imagined as a child or dreaming soul.

Looking into the stars still can be romantic at the right moment or location but on board of a ship it's hostile environment. Of all the 72 Union Member Species, the singular ones in the Rim or even rarer unaligned worlds only one Creature was found that could count as a real cosmozoic life form. They are called Radiance Harvester. Because they seem to feed on backround radiation. Yes Bacteria and Fungi can survive outside in space but not much else. Even Eltaryn that can survive without atmosphere die eventually.
So the black sea has met the most brutal encounter a Dreamland can have. Reality kicked in and doesn't leave anymore.

Ash in Space, I think it's kinda different if you are a spaceship, but most likely it would be in Union space.

Kira it was in her house, the plan was for them to move in all together after the mission. Kira, Anika and their, the ice queen.
Now it's the Ghoz'Tarc or just to sound creepy inside Ashlei. 🤪

Same goes for Arkham since she opened up to the crew. Maybe she moves in with Kira and her mom now, maybe she can handle the ice queen better than her own mother. Tereza after all was a demon helicopter mum, the ice queen sounds very approachable in comparison.

An Afterlife no, the Afterlife yes it's a club on Mars, it's run by a hell of a nerd who calls themself Aria T. Amendi, they is known for loving old SciFi from all species that have such stories & the whole concept of this Club & the Purgatory museum shop & restaurant is to give a deep glimpse into the history of SciFi of all kinds & media but also recreation of certain foods, goods & fan creates stuff that otherwise wouldn't be preserved, maybe the one place where fresh Gagh doesn't mean an overflow restricted goods. Aria claims to have the best selection of surviving Media from the time from 1950s to the earlier 2300s and is happy to distribute copies of it, cosplays, bound books & collectors items. Aria is a strong supporter of the Enterprise Project that aims to use real technologies to bring historical SciFi ships the glory they deserve as real ships.

Yes Kira and Ash understand each other, this is more than empathizing it's true understanding and Ash is on her way to becoming a true artificial sentience, not only an Artificial Intelligence. She is able to alter her memory more or less successful, she can lie if necessary but prefers to stay true. And if a sentient spaceship isn't a different species...

Animal companions still exist but the general consent is that they decide to stay with their tin can opener's (the EPI can provide fitting food for almost all species).

Of course their are more species in the Universe that more closely resemble humans like us and it's not difficult for any of my characters to emphathize on the same level with them as they do with other Terran's. Still some Swexer still exist in the 24. Century who are lacking general empathy.

AI says Goodbye quite often, it's after all a greating/conversation/meeting ender. Usually it's the sign for an ending of a conversation that does not allow for more discussions.

AJ... How good in saying good bye would you be if you memory is fading, you don't know exactly who you are and all you remember in bleak and bloody detail, sound, smell, visuell and temperature how your significant other died from a crude Alien bullet, you felt deflected from your armor and than hearing it entering the body behind you, grasping for air on a cold day, enemy overrun world, quickly dying, grasping for air, plea to you to live and survive, to destroy the enemy and you are promising it to her. Only to see her last breath the moment the support troups arrive...?
How good would you be if you keep this memory as a treasure?

31.12.2024 Do your characters celebrate any form of a year ending and a new one beginning?

Not really occasionally they do on mission but most of them only celebrate at home. The universe is vast and big and every habitable planet has a different cycle for a year, Terrans often try to emulate the Terran calendar for a long time after leaving Terra but that's soon overwritten by whatever time cycle is present at their next destination. However Terra has vast Droneshows and Holographic shows often with classical music in an not to loud fashion.
It's way less disturbing for other Terraborn species.
