In the year 2024, it's a bit wild to think that, once upon a time, if you needed to add a text or graphic overlay to a TV broadcast, you needed a dedicated machine for the task, not just a plain old computer with the appropriate expansion card and software.

This all started to change in the 1990s with the introduction of the #VideoToaster, which could do this using an #Amiga (or, later on, #Windows) computer.

I wonder what people are using these days?

@argv_minus_one NewTek still makes devices that do just that! The TriCaster series has direct roots to the Video Toaster.

(NewTek recently merged with another company and they now go by Vizrt, a much less cool name.)
