What charities or nonprofits do you give money to, and why?

If you had a thousand dollars that you had to give away to an organization or person that you don't personally know, what would it be and how would you decide that?

Would you give that money to one place/person, or ten different places/people?

Let's get serious: I'm putting an actual $1000 out there to give to charities or nonprofits

Convince me what cause I should give money that I'm not already giving money to

Operation Safe Escape is a group of security professionals helping people in abusive situations make a plan, get out safely, and stay safe. Lots of awesome, smart people working to help everyone they can in a world where we're always connected.

I used to volunteer with them and helped on a few cases, but I ran out of spoons to keep going. They see some serious shit.

About Us - Operation Safe Escape

@julie oh that's a wonderful org, thank you for introducing me
They've been working on creating an Opsec education program for DV shelters and safe houses for years. It looks like they've made some good progress- they hadn't announced it yet when I last volunteered with them four or five years ago.
