Mastodon is FidoNet 2.0

... if you don't remember FidoNet, here's why I think so:

1) Multiple different implementations of the interoperable software
2) Allowed people to participate in discussions and send private messages to others all over the world
3) Distribution through nodes run and paid for by people out of their own pocket for the good of the community
4) Decentralized moderation

It was my first social network, sometime back in the end 80s. I made friends there I'm still in contact with today.

@troed do you still have the rest of the aesthetic to that BBS? I surely dialed in there a time or more but the visual memory fails me. 0451-83139 @ 2:200/617 is still etched in there though :)

@letoram Unfortunately I lost _everything_ :( Only have these BBS ads since I've found them in archives etc online :)

I was 2:200/612 after I had upgraded from being point. Were you at a hub meeting at Sköld's?

@troed no, I was old in spirit but young in flesh (82a) so only visited hanging garden. My older brother knew Sköld and cohorts though.

I have meant to poke Fors about any remains of Checkpoint Charlie for a project of mine since he is still in the area, fingers crossed.

All in all the swedish BBS scene seems deserving of an archaeological expedition, with some sidetrack around Listerud and the likes.

I suspect that the digital form of "skogsporr" that was Digital Photo Gallery (Malmö?) would also make an interesting episode of snedtänkt.

@troed I do! 🙋‍♂️ I got the internet pretty early which was like 1985, even before TCP/IP was available in Sweden where Iive so my best friend was NNTP/News. But I ran som Fidonet too.
@troed Fidonet? Sounds vaguely familiar.
