Thinkpad update firmware on Linux (X1 extreme/P1 gen2) - nixCraft

Explains how to install and update Thinkpad X1 extreme or P1 Gen 2 firmware (BIOS updates) on Linux operating systems using the GUI or fwupdmgr CLI methods.

@nixCraft I've done it before, and it seemed to have worked. Been a while since anything came out for my old machine
@nixCraft Or changing their router firmware.
@nixCraft I have used fwupdmgr few times and it is working without any problem, even on my #qubes_os I remain an atheist
@nixCraft I couldn't brick my SSD because Ubuntu went out of its way to prevent me from running Crucial's tool to check for FW updates. So in the end I just gave up. Can't brick anything if you can't initiate the update!
@nixCraft lol. Those 5 second between the poweroff & reboot feel like about ten thousand years, don't they?
@nixCraft I was an XTist before I became an ATist... #oldFartPCjoke
@nixCraft my work ThinkPad (X1V8) kept freezing. The mitigation was to run on an older kernel; the (eventual) solution was to update firmware - but I had disabled fwupd in 2021 to fix a different problem - so I never got the fix until they tanked away the old kernel. 🤦
@nixCraft I'm always very humbled to see posts like this. My special obsession has been firmware for the last 7 or so years and it's nice to see LVFS and fwupd is useful for so many people.
