i just realized i didn't list anything for the musicals. please feel free to ask me about it i already used too many words

sorry i'm late but as requested by @whimwitch here is my 100% subjective top 10 musical ranking. or at least half of it bc i need to make dinner so i'll post the rest in like 2 hours LOL

1) Roméo et Juliette, de la haine à l'amour

in case the title doesn't make it obvious this is based on shakespeare's famouse work. it gets first place bc it was the first musical i got into and did irreparable damage to my brain. the actual love story is kinda mid but this is true not only of all musicals but also of romeo & juliet by design so it's fine. tybalt is hot. this is all that matters to me. most of the songs are good, tho some of the love ballads kinda drag, but once again this is true of a lot of if not all musicals. at least french ones. anyway the real important takeaway is that this made me gay when i was 10: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb3_C8mC2t4

also women: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh9Wt2SIGA4 i think they should have nasty hatesex tbh

also not from the musical itself but this music video is cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHhac9gD2DI this musical made me love escalus tbh which you can tell bc only real NERDS know that the prince from romeo & juliet is called that. my worgen back in 2011 was named escalus. fun samifer lore for you.

2) Jesus Christ Superstar

i was going to put mozart in second place but... i have to be honest with myself... the jesussy is where it's at... i feel like it's just more consistently good i guess. it has less boring songs, a sin committed by many musicals (as always). i guess the main "issue" is that there are a lot of different versions so it's hard to recommend a specific one, tho that can also be a good thing bc it means you probably have at least one version you'll vibe with. i'm partial to the 2012 arena tour one bc it's the first one i watched in full LOL, but the old movie one and the less old movie one are cool too i guess. i think the 2000 movie judas has like a very nice flavor of pathetic wet meow meow but unfortunately i can't take his matching jesus seriously... i'm a fucking weirdo so this is my favorite song bc i like jesus getting mad at god: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrossJQKMhY

having said all that i guess the main downside of that one is that it's about christianity which might be a turn off for many people. i personally have learned everything i know about christianity from jesus christ superstar, prince of egypt, wikipedia, and my partner who is jewish.

Romeo et Juliette 18. Le Duel (English Subtitles)

3) Hadestown

i'm so fucking mad this one has no proshot my guys. however all the recordings slap so whatever. hades is sooooo lysandre-coded so i cannot resist him. it's basically an orpheus/eurydice retelling but also focusing on hades and persephone's shitty failing marriage. i'm weak for partners on bad terms reconciling so i couldn't resist it... but also i love myself a good tragedy, and i especially love that it's a big theme for the musical. i felt like it was celebrating what we get from tragedies and as someone who gets more catharsis from sad endings than good ones it felt very vindicating i guess. ALSO THE OPTISMISM/PESSIMISM THEMES.....!!!!!!!!!!!! SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it has a few animatics but this was one of the first ones i saw and i still love it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJpdjnmf6t8 tbh this is a musical where imo 90% of the songs are great, the one i'm most :/ about is the one with hades and eurydice but it's not that bad and might even be good if you're into the vibes. i get the one about the wall stuck in my head regularly lolll i think my fave is still wait for me (reprise) probably...

4) Mozart l'Opéra Rock

when i was a teen i used to make fun of this one because i was so not like other girls which was ironic bc had i taken the time to look into it i would have realized it was made for me. instead it took me like 10 years to come to that realization which is very sad. anyway this is the french mozart musical where salieri has multiple gay realization. the most iconic moment is ofc when he's so horny for mozart('s music) that he manifests an entire BDSM sex club dream/nightmare that's actually a metaphor for uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh jealousy... i guess... i think it needs to be seen to be fully understood: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJRvqyz930s

it's also in full and subtitled on youtube so that's cool i think :) its main drawbacks is that the first part kind of drags and then the second part kinda of feels like a speedrun in comparison, but salieri is there being gay so it's fine. the amadeus inspiration is obvious however i have not seen amadeus myself (IT'S 3 HOURS LONG) so i can't say more than that. this does mean that salieri and mozart are spongebob coded which is important to say i think. also it ends with salieri and mozart having a gay duet about how they'll meet again in another life (mozart literally dismisses his wife while he's on his deathbed for them to have the duet. i wish this was a joke.)

5) Hamilton

i'm sorry for liking hamilton but i do... i don't know if i have to say what hamilton is LOL... i have the great privilege of being completely divorced from US history so watching it i was like damnnnnnn... no idea who those people are but this is cool!!! i think it has good music and the burr/hamilton dynamic is catnip to me so i love it. burr is the best character. it also has 5000 animatics on youtube which are fun to watch imo. this is my favorite personally even tho i have no strong feelings whatsoever for this song otherwise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeHXSsdv544

my actual favorite song is the room where it happens predictably sorryyyyyyyy

6) 1789: Les Amants de la Bastille

what if someone wrote a musical about the french revolution but actually it was about their made-up bland as hell OCs falling in love and also robespierre desmoulins and danton were there. wouldn't that be wild. well you're in LUCKKKKKKKKKKK also robespierre tapdances on a table. it is also in full subtitled on youtube, which is always a mark of a great french musical. i realize i haven't commented on the like staging of anything yet LOLLLLL but french musicals i feel like tend to have more extravagant staging than english ones... i was rly surprised by how bare hamilton's was when i watched the proshot lol. this one has a lot of fun things going on altho it's not the best one imo, but especially at the end i really loved what they did!!!

anyway the main couple is bland as hell and honestly unbearable. but lazare (the soldier character) is hot and has several hot songs and moments including a few with the main guy so i forgive. that plus the tapdancing. honestly the vibes are fun despite everything... this is NOT my favorite but it has greatttttttt vibes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OQQ465GkW8

this is my actual favorite, for the military girlies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTRDgs5tE_8

a fun underrated aspect of this one imo is that (SPOILERS) in some versions they played the main guy died at the end and in others the main girl did! (SPOILERS) i think it's cool when they do that. so i thought i'd point it out.

TO BE CONTINUED SORRYYYY

I'M DONE WATCHING ARCANE SO HERE'S THE REST

7) Starmania

THIS DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE LOWER THAN ALL THE OTHER FRENCH MUSICALS I CITED but this is a subjective ranking so. anyway starmania is a cyberpunk rock opera that's set in like a dystopian fucked up future and features many songs that are iconic for a lot of french people. i once read a songfic about kaiba set to le blues du businessman so now this song is intrisically linked to him LOL. it has a gay character and a transfem character (who calls herself a transvestite, but you know, it was the 70s) the aesthetic is??? interesting??? not in a bad way at all but definitely not the stuff you'd see today, it is very clearly from the 70s LOL. it is on youtube but it seems like some of the songs get claimed easily :/ i would definitely recommend that one if you don't mind something that is PAINFULLY 70s tho.

i'm gonna link to this cover of the iconic song from the trans character sadia bc 1) i love her, we support women's wrongs and 2) i just think it's a good cover!!! the clip is cool!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnaC9yxjN00

8) Les Misérables

i feel bad putting it so low but alas. i will still recommend it tho. i think the og french version is cool!! i'm more familiar with the english version tho. i liked the movie okay??? which i've come to understand is an unpopular opinion. i think the biggest crime the movie commits is adding that horrible crunching sound when javert throws himself in the seine, it's so fucking stupid and breaks any kind of emotional tension the scene has LOL. i don't even mind russel crowe's singing. my actual favorite version is probably the 25th anniversary concert tho. norm lewis javert!!!!!!!!!! my beloved!!!!!! there used to be a video of the confrontation on youtube but i can't find it anymore so i guess it got taken down :/ instead i'll give you the movie confrontation bc it's so funny to me how it looks like javert is coming out from nowhere like he was hiding under the bed or sth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jfRE_FljrE

i haven't talked about the plot of les misérables it's about the june rebellion in paris and NOT the french revolution like some people think 🤓 altho in fairness it's mostly about a guy named jean valjean having a bad time a lot of the time. and also he's being chased by a cop who may or may not have the hots for him. there are also young revolutionaries one of which might be gay for the other who is only gay for france. it ends badly. i recommend it if you like things that end badly where lots of people die bc oh boy does it fucking deliver on that!!!!!!!!!!!!! the music is good. there are a few boring ballads but not as many as there could be. it absolutely objectively deserves to be higher up but i'm a philistine.

YouTube

9) La Légende du Roi Arthur

honestly this one probably deserves to be higher but i don't want to put it above les mis bc i'd feel too bad so this'll do. it's about 🤓 king arthur 🤓 from him getting picked up to be king arthur to him getting cucked by his wife. "samifer," i hear you say, "what a weird cut off point for a king arthur musical!" AND I AGREE!!! BUT THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT SO GOOD TO ME. also i saw it in real life so :) it's also on youtube!!! with subtitles!!!

the staging is very cool (i think probably the coolest use of special effects on stage i've seen for a french musical but ymmv) most of the songs slap, morgane lafey or whatever her name is in english is incredible, and méléagant is my meow meow. méléagant also has a bunch of dog minions who are just guys on stilts(?) but they are dogs. so you know. love that. this is my favorite song from the musical (not a pro video but it'll do): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NZWAcy5ogs i freaked out when it started when we were there and the people sitting in front of me and my friends were like "wtf" like SORRY FOR BEING EXCITED IN THE AUDIENCE OF A MUSICAL!!!! I'M SORRY FOR HAVING A GOOD TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!

also morgane and arthur have sex on-stage. well not explicitly but still honestly more explicitly than i expected when we went LOL

10) THE KOREAN FRANKESTEIN MUSICAL

i'm putting this one in 10th place bc i haven't actually seen it but i first heard of it like nearly 10 years ago and everything i saw from it looked so good and i want to be able to see it so bad and i just googled it for fun and found out there might be a proshot coming out soon???? please??????????????? everything i learned from it i learned from korean fanworks (apparently there's a full synopsis available now but i don't wanna get spoiled) so the jist of it i got is that one guy goes to get guillotined instead of his friend and then the friend puts the head back on the body and it's frankenstein or whatever IT'S INSANEEEEEE here are videos from it on youtube that i have on hand:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpaBaIbh4Ic (arrest??????)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SICcvIB6gGE (guy goes to get guillotined, f in the chat)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VQ1AvJsJJ8 (fucked up frankenstein machine???)

THE ENDDDDDD thank you to whoever read all this stuff. you have my respect

@samifer *taking notes* starmania *nods, nods* i love ye olde transvestite representation! and my favorite decade for art is the 70s so it would not be painful for me in any way!
@whimwitch i thought you might hahaha i think you'll definitely enjoy it then!!
@samifer these two sound amazing 👀 i too love stories about hades and his failing marriage and im also a mozart/salieri shipper from the movie Amadeus, so id loce to see an extension of this Sponge/Squid dynamic in a bdsm context???! wow!

@whimwitch i DEFINITELY recommend these two a lot they're great!!! i used to be obsessed with hadestown a few years back i listened to the albums on loop for like weeks lol. apparently there were plans to film a proshot but they got canned bc of internal conflicts or something? i was rly sad when i learned bc i was very much looking forward to it 💔

mozart l'opéra rock was my introduction to the ship and it's greattttt it's also very popular (i think it's probably the most popular french musical when it comes to transformative fandom tbh, literally today i saw that someone reblogged some of my ancient mozart/salieri fanart i made over a decade ago on my old blog LOL) altho not as popular as it used to be in franco or anglo fandom sadly. but i know it's had multiple japanese and korean runs, and it's also super popular in russia for some reason. salieri is 100% the highlight for me but mozart is also rly fun

@samifer pls list ur top 10 fav musicals 👀
@whimwitch i will think about it as i make lunch however i will forewarn you that it's very likely going to be 90% french musicals LOL
@samifer thats ok! i watch musicals in all languages and would love to have french recs
@samifer i approve of your taste in final fantasy characters!
@samifer aaAaAAahh AAHHHHH YOU LIKE YN AND PETSCOP TOO sorry i've never seen someone else on fedi that likes both, let alone .flow too ... i'm glad to see someone that ships tachibana and oda too lolol
@slowlygrowingdeaf omg hiii! :3 yes!!! i'm glad to see someone else into petscop and YN too! and i see in your profile that you like big bottoms, Taste
@samifer It's the best I can offer. It's more fun that way
