Scotfax: Driving Single Track Roads on Undiscovered Scotland

Information and images about Driving Single Track Roads in the Scotfax section of Undiscovered Scotland.

@UndisScot Single tracks are great! As a cyclist you have to distinguish three widths:
* wide enough for cars to overtake
* to narrow for cars to overtake
* to narrow for cars to overtake but drivers think it is wide enough to do so
The last category can be quite dangerous, but it helps to drive more to the middle of the road.
@UndisScot I just went through my notes and maps and realised that one of my best pictures from #Scotland has been taken very close to this one on the B8043. I need to get them properly digitised…
@rstub @UndisScot While driving I always pass cyclists with distance they can fall without danger of being hit. I learned this years ago when my wife and I were cycling on a wide 4 lane road. She fell on a bump into traffic and a car missed her head by a few inches. In Washington cyclists are legal vehicles and must follow laws, and cars must treat cyclists as entitled to the whole lane where there are no designated bike lanes.
@wsrphoto @UndisScot This is an excellent rule to judge the required distance when passing a cyclist! Our roads would be much safer if people followed your approach. Here in Germany the required distance got increased recently, effectively making it necessary to change lane and prohibiting to overtake cyclists on narrow streets. But many drivers either don’t know this or ignore it.
