Self report
@mcalel care more about "Shrimp Jesus" tbh
@0xPortal @mcalel yeh, that piqued my interest, but I'm afraid it's AI hallucinating about AI slop 😖
@sortius @0xPortal @mcalel Shrimp Jesus is a real, particularly infamous piece of AI slop.
Boomers Getting Tricked By AI On Facebook

YouTube
@roaminchemicals @sortius @mcalel oh my god Shrimp Jesus
@0xPortal @roaminchemicals @mcalel well, that was a great reminder why I deleted my FB account and never went back (well, that and the racists)
@mcalel
Searched up "Shrimp Jesus" and the hecc? It seems to now have become a symbol of "Dead Internet Theory"

Also, I will say that "slop" has been a thing even before the AI regression. One of Google's examples is basically half of Youtube, and another of its examples is 100% of modern recipe sites.
@radmin a lot of slop content on YouTube and such. Everybody trying to copy MrBeast and the “TOP 10 CELEBRITY WEIGHT LOSS STORIES NUMBER 3 WILL SHOCK YOU”. It’s just become so unavoidable now in part because of AI.
@radmin @mcalel
Not enough people blame Google for making recipes impossible to read online
@radmin @mcalel
I'm kind of surprised that Google hasn't built a bot to scrape all of those SEO recipes and present them directly in the search page so no one even needs to click on the SEO results

@radmin @mcalel as much as I agree, slop has been around for a long time, it's been easy to filter out. You knew that certain sites were just going to be slop, so ignored results.

These days it's just slop on slop on slop, so trying to weed out suitable results can be difficult, especially for popular topics

@mcalel Just take the Monty-Python spam sketch and replace "spam" with "slop".

e.g.

Wife: Have you got anything without slop?

Waitress: Well, there's slop egg sausage and slop, that's not got much slop in it.

Wife: I don't want ANY slop!

etc.

@mcalel Is there any AI generated content that *isn't* used primarily for profit?
@mcalel I really really dislike the Google AI pretend search results. Is there any way to turn them off?
@TMEubanks @mcalel or the read it from reddit relay.
@TMEubanks @mcalel ugh I was trying to do this today. Worthless unreliable information, and so costly. My heart breaks.

@TMEubanks @mcalel

To avoid the AI Overview and other specialized Google search features, you can choose the "Web" mode on the Google search result page

Or use the following (thanks to @ernie ) to go straight to Web mode:

How I Made Google’s “Web” View My Default Search

Forget AI. Google just created a version of its search engine free of the extra junk it has added over the past decade-plus. You just need one URL parameter.

Tedium: The Dull Side of the Internet.
@mcalel WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? IT HAS BECOME SELF AWARE, SHUT IT DOWN!
@mcalel as opposed to the human generated content made for the same purpose?
@mcalel "Shrimp Jesus" That's oddly specific
@mcalel @stroughtonsmith The second and third examples aren’t even slop. They’re SEO spam, or whatever we called it.
@mcalel it does have links tho
@mcalel even a stopped clock is right twice a day

@mcalel

Shrimp Jesus is only irrelevant to the heretics.

@mcalel
Thank you for bringing the Lord to my life.
I didnt know i missed shrimpjesus before i found him trough you.
@mcalel I like the overviews. They pull together multiple sources to answer your specific query. Occasionally saves me about 1-5 minutes per search query, a significant speedup.
Of course this skips the authorship question, but I usually go to the source to verify.
@mcalel at this point is this ai overview mandatory for google search or you can opt out of it?
