Completely rearranging one of my #modularsynth `within the limitations of the case. Also I have a huge spring reverb tank hiding in there. The Doepfer modules need a lot of depth and need to clear the handle recess and the power supply heatsink.

So first I'm doing a test fitting. Got a few more modules to put in.

I’ve set it up as to right now how the layout is on modular grid. Now i have to set up the power, try to balance each section. I’m not pegging, i’m at less than 2 amps on +12v, out of 3 amps on the #behringer Go case. This setup has seen so many changes over the past 10+ years, including the case.

The blank panel is not really blank, that is a placeholder for my spring reverb module. It has an audio in, audio out, level, on/off and blue led when on. #modular #synth

Then i’ll have to align all the sliding nuts and tighten everything. Probably should do a power on test before doing that, however… yes it is #behringer & #doepfer heavy, with a few #OiiiAudio modules (mixer, joystick, ring mod, buffered mult etc) and onesies and kits (dannysound vca, cem3340, events etc).

I used a lot of this (and some #dreadbox modules like Antidote/Karplus strong, now replaced by Brains aka Plaits - plaits didnt have karplus) for Reves Verberes #music https://soundcloud.com/francois_dion/sets/reves-verberes

Reves Verberes

Modular and semi-modular synth and sequencers album with some drum machine accompaniment. Recorded in 2022 and 2023 and mastering done in 2023. One year later, now available on soundcloud. Equipment

It doesnt look like it, but it has a lot of sound generation built into it. Obviously the model D is a full synth end to end and takes 1/4 of the case. The #behringer brains is another obvious sound source (almost self contained too).

But other sound sources include the Rat King modular Event for #eurorack #modular #synth

It can be used as a vco, envelope, portamento, waveshaper, lfo and general clicky weirdness

Another not so obvious sound source is the Doepfer A124 VCF Wasp Filter. Out of the box it is “just” a filter with resonance, although with plenty of personality. But in my case, i modified it to add an optional self resonance. It can then be CV controlled as a VCO, but not a pure sine as is often the case, but something with grit.

@f_dion oh that might make me like the wasp a bit more

@forestine @f_dion Wasp is great fun for what it does. I still wish it hadn't been my first filter though. Something more versatile would have been better.

The TG3 Gristleizer is even less versatile than Wasp but boy howdy is it fun.

It just occurred to me I have never tried pinging the Wasp. Have y'all?

@mkb @f_dion i am constantly advising people not to get it as their first filter but they have already fallen in love with it. my first filter was the Doepfer SEM which is super versatile though can't self-resonate.

someone once told me Wasp is like the Jnco jeans of filters.

@forestine @mkb which one do you end up recommending? Not sure what was my first filter. Too long ago. Happy to use the wasp filter or the model d (not modular, but it has an external input that routes through the filter and the filter can be CV controlled) for a different feel. Then for the Roland sound, I got the 100m tribute modular and my mini skiff 100m

And I've been know to use the TD3 or MS20 with the modular

@f_dion @forestine I always suggest Ripples (or a clone) because it is so versatile.
@mkb @f_dion Ripples is nice. there are a lot of filters that can get a more varied set of sounds than Wasp. Right now I've been suggesting Cinnamon a lot
@forestine @f_dion Cinnamon is hard to get now, yes? Or am I confusing it with Carbon?
@mkb @f_dion i think that's Carbon. though now Cinnamon only comes in a black panel, boooo
@forestine @f_dion Aha! I knew you were good people! Despite being all about the black clothing, I always go for light colored modules when there is a choice.
@mkb @f_dion ooh i see some synthfox!
@forestine @f_dion Sledgehammer, yeah. TBH that’s one where I’ve yet to get my head around.
@mkb @forestine yes, you can ping it. Even without my mod (well, not mine, it is documented on Doepfer’s website) it’ll work. Nice kicks from a pulse.

@mkb @forestine here is how it looks on the scope, pinging the #doepfer wasp filter with the sync trigger from a #korg #sq1 (in yellow) with resonance at max, mod off, LP mix full (0) and freq cutoff at around 4 I think.

#modular #synth #vcf

@mkb @forestine comparison at a lower frequency cutoff of the same ping through the wasp and through the model d filter

Look different, sound different, both have much lower amplitude than at a higher cutoff, normal as we are using a low pass

@f_dion ooh what was the mod?

@fuzzySynths see section 4.2.10 of https://doepfer.de/DIY/a100_diy.htm

And now there is a picture, even easier to do!

A-100 do it yourself page

@f_dion Thanks, it sounds gnarly enough already but interested to hear what more it can do.
@fuzzySynths the circuit is basically abusing a 4069 cmos logic inverter into an analog signal amplifier as part of the filter design, giving it that unique sound
@f_dion for once, I bought my Wasp VCF already built as it was well cheap, so haven't really explored how it works. I usually reach for an MS20 filter first, the Kassutronics one is really creamy.
@f_dion I use my opto-vcf often as sound source as well, massive! ^-^
@f_dion interesting.. I'm looking for something that size that does that sort of thing but haven't come across that one before.
@dj2mn if you have some questions on it, let me know
