At #bclxiii one person asked me what tech events are still going on in #London?

The combination of the COVID pandemic and WFH has kinda done a number on tech meetups/user groups/etc. Plus RIP Skills Matter, and Meetup and Eventbrite are, well, not exactly optimal for finding things.

Off the top of my head, the London Ruby User Group is pretty active, as are Python London, Rust London, the London Java Community, Codebar etc. What else?

Meetups and in-person events are not for everyone—being centered around pubs and alcohol puts some people off, for instance—but they can still be quite good ways to meet interesting people, scout out jobs/contract work, and often learn remarkable amounts of cool stuff from people generously sharing knowledge.

They're the one thing I recommend most to people starting out in tech.

And they're way less of a buzzword-ridden hellzone than LinkedIn.

@tommorris codebar is definitely active but some of our hosts have been unable to keep hosting us due to budget cuts so if you know friendly companies who can offer us some space once in a while, tell them to get in touch! We could also do with more coaches, especially JavaScript and Python.
@brunogirin @tommorris have you tried the BCS? They have a decent space. I know they have let some groups use it in the past but don't know what deal they got.
@brunogirin @tommorris I've just noticed the list I was keeping of "London event venues" is at least 5 years out of date! https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/London_event_venues Feels like there used to be a lot more options :-(

@harry_wood @tommorris yes, especially considering one of our biggest and most reliable hosts used to be Twitter, before the X mutation. The lesson seems to be: don't rely on a few large hosts, have many smaller hosts instead, like a... federation of hosts?
@tommorris Not london but only a shortish train into Kent you have https://codeharbour.co.uk/
