Here I am, someone who lost their tech job, trying to find a way to help the people I’m seeing here who have lost their tech jobs and not able to find new ones. This is nutty, there has to be a way.
@jerry here is some fair use common stock propaganda material
@jerry for more constructive help to the unemployed i would say build out some things and get them online, stay active, get outside, and apply - eventually they will find good matches
@jerry You are doing it! The thing you should be doing. (IMO) Caring for others is our only way through this. Thank you for caring, Jerry. šŸ’œ

@jerry If I knew how to make a tech co-op work under capitalism, I would have started it a decade ago when I was on the board of the local Free Geek.

The Free Geek is still around as a non-profit, and I haven't had access to their internal financials in years, but I think it's still unpaid volunteers and people doing court-ordered "community service", though I could be wrong about that, I know they were considering at least one paid position.

@jerry That's very punk rock. You're doing the job Joe Strummer trained you for. You may not be able to change the entire world, but you can be cool to a few people around you.

@jerry

Maybe you can connect some people who will start their own business?

Perhaps a co-op?

@jerry I think it depends on the people and platform? My search is going OK.

@jerry Whenever I see a group of super talented people looking for work, it kills my soul that I can't just go get a small business loan and build an amazing company with people who have decades of experience, amazing work ethic, and a vast wealth of knowledge who are only unemployed because some shareholder needed another boat. 😭

@jerry it absolutely sucks, to get hired these days you need to either:

A: know someone who has an open position and wants to hire you
B: apply at an extraordinary rate for a long period of time.
Last year it took me 3 months and 2,000 applications.

@jerry i feel like something has to happen to shatter the current hiring culture because somehow i hear this thing now and then about companies not being able to find people, and then simultaneously there are all these people out of work (includes me, who has never been able to find a job in the first place). like we need to annihilate AI filtering and HR screeners who don't know tech and see what happens
