So much of my job is this over and over again on a loop:

"So what do you think we should do in order to responsibly build the Torment Nexus?"

"You can't. It's a Torment Nexus. Stop it."

"But the Torment Nexus is inevitable!"

"It's not. You could just not do it. You could stop right now."

@evacide Thankfully my current job is not like this but this is how I feel when I look through software job ads.
@greg @evacide an IT recruiter actually said to me "if you're going to be ethical I can't help you".

@moz @greg @evacide

Honest I suppose 🙄

This is why I can not 'just get a job' any more.

Those days are gone!

@moz

omg the Overton Window has been boarded over

@greg @evacide

@moz @greg @evacide That's pretty much every recruiter, everywhere, in my experience.
@moz @evacide I have a non zero amount of sympathy. If you tried to dress ethically you’d walk around in that one brand of sneakers and one or two T-shirts and get arrested for public indecency.
@greg @evacide you don't need pants for video calls!
@evacide but if WE dont build the torment nexus THEY will build the torment nexus
@DrorBedrack @evacide It's giving "the prisoners dilemma" but with a capitalist twist where you're rewarded for being the worst person possible.

@DrorBedrack @evacide

Come join our symposium on building ethical open source Torment Nexuses!

@RL_Dane @DrorBedrack @evacide Subscribe to my YouTube channel to watch a tutorial on how to self host your very own Torment Nexus!
@evacide “Yeah, but the idea’s out there. If we don’t, somebody else will…”
@evacide "Also, the torment Nexus doesn't even solve the problem we want to solve, or that our customers want solved."
"But if it does solve it in the future, how will we know how to use it?"
@blackcoat @evacide "We just need to take a fail-fast approach to quickly bring a Torment Nexus prototype to market and gauge how our customers are using it."
@evacide nobody wants to be last to build the torment nexus
@migurski @evacide
🥥 Nobody volunteers to fall into an orphan-crushing machine! 🥥
@evacide but if I don't fill my house with manure and set it on fire, someone else will first!
@evacide But the company that sells Torment Nexus on a Chip units (TNoCs) and Torment Processing Units (TPUs) is now worth $4 trillion...
@catsalad @evacide But if we don't deploy Torment Nexus in all our SaaS, how will people summarize emails which were re-written by Torment Nexus?
@catsalad @evacide gonna call the impending economic collapse the “NVIDIA Torment Crisis”

@evacide I've worked in a bit of that some years ago. It's fun seeing how the nexus works on the background and how naive people in general think the world works and don't know how much has already been built and is out there consuming stuff.

Anyway, I nowadays am looking to work for something that could be considered boring or at least not building that kinda of thing. It's really impossible to avoid it 😞

@evacide

"ONLY YOU - Can Prevent The Torment Nexus."

@evacide I'm waiting for the Nexus with Apple Torment. It will be the best Torment Nexus.
@emag @evacide what? NO! The open sources Nexus called GNexUs, which is maintained by two people no one has ever heard of and just recruited this cool totally not suspicious fella into their main team will be the best and most trustable solution, you see, for open source blabla blebla bluhblibla blehblergh bla and that's why blrantblabla (...)

@emag

Though Apple will create their own proprietary form of Torment and it will largely be incompatible with existing Torments. But on the bright side, their Torment will integrate exceptionally well with the full line of most recent Apple products.

😉

@evacide

@evacide "Windows Nex only runs on hardware with at least 40 TOPs (Torment Operations Per second)"

@evacide I wish they'd connect the dots and outright say, "if I build the torment nexus, I can get rich by hurting people".

I'm sorry you have to put up with people trying to get you to ethicswash their bad idea so they can pretend the "by hurting people" clause isn't there.

@evacide Mine is:

So we built the Torment Nexus. Can you make sure it meets accessibility requirements? We go live in two hours.

*Not really, but I'm cranky today.

@evacide But the shareholders are expecting a Torment Nexus. Our stock depends on it.
@evacide It's starting to feel like Roko's Basilisk more than the Torment Nexus.
@evacide @Mabande Turns out nobody needed to be threatened into building Roko's Basilisk.

@corbden @evacide @Mabande well, many techbros DO unironically believe in this thing and that's why AI is ever so much pushed by them, despite all realism talks trying to educate them that it's just a slikely as time travel or string theory being proven emprically.

Which is silly, because did they never heard of the Great Basilisk of The South? The super extremely super advanced ultra AI that will put everyone who did not achieve the goal to build it, but especially so those who instead believed into the inferior Roko's Basilisk, into the Torment Nexus? smh my head my head

@evacide Our competitors are desperate to stop our Torment Nexus initiative so they can get there first. One of them even hired some guy to pretend to be from "the future" warning us that we were "dooming civilization." That shows you how important it is that we build it now.

@evacide

Example: the IT staff of RealPage, Blackstone & Blackrock

They helped billionaires & criminal organizations launder their cash through the residential housing market.

It ballooned mortgages, rents, commercial leases & homelessness globally and destabilized democracy.

Do they ever feel guilt for the massive degree of harm they inflict on society?

Now ask the same questions of cryptocurrency & AI techs...

RealPage fighting charges that it helps landlords fix rent prices

The federal government is suing RealPage, a rental software firm, over alleged price-fixing that inflates rents for tenants. The lawsuit accuses RealPage o

ConsumerAffairs
@evacide but.. but.. profit?!?! /sarcasm
@evacide until folks start building things folks want without letting the enshittification contingent slurp it up, we'll be in this loop...or until the planet topples, whichever comes with a better dividend.
@zeruch @evacide
It appears that destroying the planet has amazing short and medium term ROI potential.
@evacide
Always advise them to build the Torment Nexus in such a way that they and those closest to them will endure the most torment.
@evacide your own personal torment nexus!
@evacide I am so close to asking for your Torment Nexus advice, F***

@evacide

— just picture it:

“TORMENT NEXUS, now with AI”

@evacide
"Look, we're already halfway done..."

"What? How?!"

"Well, okay, it's still in planning, but we've got all the approvals and environmental impact studies, and that's the part that takes forever."

@evacide

"Mr. President, we must not allow a Torment Nexus gap!"

@evacide "Clearly your concern comes down to framing. How can we rebrand the Torment Nexus to make you feel better about it?"

@evacide

At least they'd like to do it responsibly?

@evacide

"No problem bro, I got you covered. One responsible Torment Nexus coming up.

First, attach one end of this clip to your testicles (it is only ever a testicle-having person that asks for this, so we are ok here), and the other end to this battery. Now we just wire the Torment Nexus prototype into the switch for the circuit.

Every time someone uses the Nexus, you get shocked, see, you are responsible!"

"No, not like that."

@pseudonym

…remarkably reasonable. 🤔

@evacide

@evacide
We got a whole bunch of previous gen nexus parts on black Friday sale... Umm... So you know of any other types of nexus we could use them for?
@evacide Ah, the inevitability argument. It shows up ever time someone pitches a really stupid idea
@evacide The end boss of this logic is always "but if we don't build the Torment Nexus, someone else will!"

@evacide "The only winning move is not to play."

(The next tattoo if I ever decide on the look.)

@evacide it’s a convenient way to think about it, because than you have no responsibility over it
@evacide We start each torment nexus with fresh free-range recycled electrons.
@evacide You are not alone. You have my empathy, sympathy, and thanks.
