The oyster mushrooms are going wild here this year with the mild, damp weather.

And spore prints are so lovely, as well as handy for helping identify different varieties. I only had an old shoe box to make this one.

@elliek This is magnificent!

Imagine the feast!
@elliek I'm growing some chestnut mushrooms at home & plan on growing oysters too 😊
@PhoenixSerenity
That is great!
These mushrooms I posted the other day on the post below were, I think from an oyster mushroom kit I bought last winter. The kit was a little disappointing, but when it seemed finished I put the growing medium with mycelium into various dead stumps around us. It seems that these grew from that! So it keeps on giving!

Attached: 1 image Question for anyone who might know, thinking in particular of @[email protected] But there are many more who might know... Are these oyster mushrooms, do you think? They are growing where an old tree stump was, but it has now disappeared. #fungi #askfedi #identify #EllieKPosts

@elliek

Wow! I've never seen oysters in the wild. We've got a lot growing in logs. Is that a dead tree? Did they colonize naturally?

@MCDuncanLab
That is a dead tree, and there are more growing on a rotting fallen branch not far from that tree. They must have colonized naturally. I've seen them in previous years but not known what they are. They just get old and die, not collected. It's not on my property, sadly. I should ask if I can pick some, but I never see the house owner except once when the wife was rather rude to me, accusing my husband of kicking our dog in front of their house. I can tell you THAT never happened!

@elliek

Ah, well you know they love your environment!! You can always plant your own on your own property.

Look for recently felled hardwood trees after storms or if utility crews come through and then buy some commercial spawn.

These are golden oysters we inoculated in 2020. The logs are getting spent so it's time to do more. This is a summer fruiting variety; our cold weather varieties do ok but not awesome.

@MCDuncanLab
These look great!
Good tips, thank you.
