somebody should do an ancient greek philosophy one. PLATO Phonetic Alphabet
@nash Shouldn't that be for the Greek alphabet?
NOTE: I updated 'Vole' to 'Vintage' based on some feedback from @starluna (ty for the input!)

NOTE 2: At this point I kinda consider it too late to make further changes, just since it has circulated enough as is that it'd be confusing.

Maybe someday we can host an official review & release an update. Especially cause I just realized I coulda put PLUMPOST for P, aw mannn

@nash No. Do not be tempted by the plums. PODCAST fits the bill better imo!!
@touk I think you're right. PLUMPOST would be me letting my personal biases interfere with my duty to remain impartial
@nash PLUMPOST is indeed a jolly option. And though VOLE is sweet, VINTAGE works well too. Were there any notions for “I” besides “INTERNET”? At any rate, thx for this delightful revamp. Vamp on.

@nash
There are several versions of the phonetic alphabet, NATO being just one. So, if you need to update yours, don't be shy. You could version them.

(I'm a fan of your alphabet, it's awesome! Next time I have to give info over the phone I hope to use it for real.)

#cutie #phoneticAlphabet

@nash standardizing things can take DECADES
@nash if you ever do versioning, I’d put forth eight as Ada, or Ada Lovelace. Etymological branch from craps slang, Ada from Decatur, but cooler and nerdier

@nash I think there needs to be a different word for "V." With a Spanish / Latin American accent, the B and the V are very similar for American English ears. With my accent you might actually hear "bowl" instead of "vole."

Possibilities:

Verily
Vitamin
Video
Voluptuous
Volcano
Voice
Veterinarian
Velociraptor
Vivacious
Voicemail

@starluna oh good point, okay I updated it to 'Vintage'!
@nash Lovely word. Excellent choice.
@nash sevenescence is Inspired, thank you
@hexephre 😂 lmao the truth is I was struggling for a sevenesque word

@nash

I would listen to the Fangirl Tummyache Podcast.

@nash Witchy Tummyache Fangirl!

@nash 🤔 The only word I know with the phonetic alphabet is my last name, thanks to repeatedly hearing my veteran father do so growing up: "echo tango zulu echo lima".

The CUTIE version: "eggnog tummyache zipper eggnog lemonade". ... 🤣 eggnog lemonade probably would be a reason for a tummy ache; I might have to try it next time I need to spell out my name.

@nash quinoa is the only one I disagree with as it could be mistaken for K.

I would suggest Quest or Quickie

Also I'm gonna start using this at work to annoy my military broworkers.

@citrus @nash

And its pronunciation is very unstable. You have to be able to say it, and also to recognize it when someone else says it.

Among the obvious choices, "quack" is pretty qute.

@nash

I have one issue with this. The idea behind a phoenetic alphabet is it should be intuitive. If someone does not know what quinoa is, they could assume it starts with a K. Another word would be better.

@nash RIP me, died at TUMMYACHE
@touk death by tummyache. an honorable & not unfamiliar way to go 😔
@nash "death by laughing at the word tummyache" tho? what's the honor level on that one
@touk we don't need to tell them ALL the details
@nash @touk And who hasn't laughed so hard their stomach hurt?

@nash

It’s awesome!
I have to spell four letters of my seven letter last name phonetically every single time I give it out.

I’ve been doing

Z zebra
B boy
N Nancy
Y yellow

Let me see

Z zipper
N naptime?
B boba
Y yarrow - that’s easy. :)

How are our outsourced reps going to do with your list?

I’m sure they have no clue what Nancy means.

@nash whatever happened to...

'ay for 'orses,
Beef or mutton,
See for yourself
Etc. etc. etc

@nash surely Soup not Steampunk!

@nash Pure Genius! I see just one poblem: MAGPIE and NAPTIME are to similar and may be missunderstood over bad transmission or in loud environments.

Maybe change Magpie to Marshmellow or something like that.

cheers!

@marmeladenbaguette @nash

second magpie naptime confusion risk, also would avod compound consonants as in "steampunk".

quality mind, very good work.

@marmeladenbaguette @nash when I cycle past magpies I tell them what they are by pointing at each one and saying “Maggie-pie”

@nash N LIKE NANCY
M LIKE MICHAEL

are what I use normally :)

@nash this all works for me! except eightober- i feel like i'd have no idea what someone was talking about if they said this to me.

what about "figure eight" or something that is more cemented in the current lexicon?

(just coming from a place of having no goddamn clue what the charge nurse is talking about over the radio using plain english and their alleged best speaking voice)

@nash also, coming from the radio side of things- if someone said "yarrow" i'd probably assume they said "arrow"- unless they pronounced it to rhyme with "tomorrow"
@nash this may be the very best example of chaotic good. XYLOPHONE killed me 🤣
@dvogel @nash it kind of reminds me when those furries hacked the merchant shipping operations forum and changed everything to uwu-speak 😁
@vfrmedia @dvogel @nash I came here to praise xylophone, too. Evil genius.
@nash Lemonade Omelette Vintage Eggnog Internet Tummyache. 💛

@nash PODCAST!? WTF PROTOGEN.

uuuuugh...

@nash this is extremely funny that you ended with ninetales because I didn't even notice I was doing it to the tune of the pokerap until I got to that XDDDDDDDDDDD

@nash I've heard of a program enabling coding through speech, Talon, which describes a phonetic alphabet with the following property:
every word is a single syllable long.

Here is the default dictionary (it can be reconfigured):

I still prefer Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.
@nash Me, I've been using geography for decades. Works well when working on the EU level with people in different countries/BelgiumEnglandRussiaKenyaOmanWales

@nash This could end up with some awkward exchanges.

@MeiLin @nash there are now two german alphabets, though…
@nash I just tend to make up words on the spot because I can't memorize any phonetic alphabet.
@LunaDragofelis @nash personally I've memorized it only for my legal surname because even picking specific words like "B is in brother" people still somehow wrote down my name with a V instead of a B
