I mean, since #Mastodon and much of the #Fediverse do not track any data, how the heck are we supposed to screen for people's ages? All we can do is ask and use the honor system when they create an account.

For that matter, how is anyone supposed to verify and enforce it?

I've seen enough kids work around the rules behind parents' backs to know it's not going to work in practice.

@TheManyVoices it's not supposed to work. If the politicians ever solved a problem, they wouldn't be able to campaign endlessly about how they're *going* to solve the problem, just vote for us again!
@The Many Voices of Anne Ahlert This whole law is made by people who "know" that any and all social media are centralised silos operated by big corporations.

There's one guy way out in Bugger All, Australia, who has created more Fediverse server apps since 2010 than anyone else, four of which still exist, two of which he still maintains, another one of which I post from right now. Their "age verification" is a switch with which you "confirm" that you're over 13. That's all.

The stuff he makes is among the most advanced in the Fediverse. Still, in terms of age verification, there's no more it could do.

@errbufferoverfl Submission done, my first! tl;dr-> don't rush to solve a problem that hasn't been shown to exist and where you don't know how to create solutions without compromising the privacy of all users
