I don't trust BlueSky. Backed by Jack Dorsey, trying to tie cryptocurrencies in, likely plans for advertising, no plans to tie it to the ActivityPub which can connect it directly here to Mastodon and no public instances demonstrated yet.

I weigh the good against the bad, of course.

I like the feeds feature on BlueSky.

I hate how disconnected the instances are on Mastodon, but there are currently no public instances on BlueSky if even possible, so that complaint is not even comparably fair.

Outside that I struggle to find much to complain about in regards to Mastodon, actually.

If BlueSky can demonstrate public instancing and that they are better than Mastodon in being more connected then that would convince me, but it's yet to be seen.

One last thing I hate about both BlueSky and the main Mastodon server that public instances solve is the character limit of posts. Look at how I had to split this up into 4 posts. Why? Because I only get 500 characters here on Mastodon! That's unacceptable. This crosspost is worse on BlueSky.

This was already a problem on Twitter. Currently X has it at 280 for a free account for no good reason other than the history of Twitter being 140 characters due to being based on text message limitations.

Both are much better than modern X. BlueSky effectively is a continuation of Twitter from 3 years ago right now. If Mastodon version 5 automates remote login, whatever you want to call it or BlueSky demonstrates better instancing then that would settle it for me.

For now I'm crossposting on both with no particular expectations, but remaining optimistic.

@mischiefaaron thank god he left bluesky in may 2024.
