Mastodon: Bluesky is Bad, actually
Bluesky: Mastodon is Bad, actually

It’s like a shit version of West Side Story. how long before a Mastodon user and a Bluesky user fall in love while communicating exclusively over the fedi bridge

There’s also a third subset of people who say cross posting is bad, to which I say “cool”
@sophie it's the whole internet that's Bad, actually.
@Kilian @sophie Every time I see this Romeo & Juliet thing about which social medium is the hottest and the bestest and the most responsible, I think of the wise words of @adactio who wrote: "they’re all just syndication endpoints to me"
https://adactio.com/journal/20323
The syndicate

Cross-posting to wherever is flavour of the month.

@paul @Kilian @sophie @adactio a proper fediverse syndication however is not via copies. Instead your own blog becomes a fediverse publisher and integrates natively. This means for example that people can comment on your articles directly on their own instances and you can reply from your own blog. I just set this up this week in my end https://dbzer0.com/blog/this-blog-is-now-federated-natively-to-lemmy/
This blog is now federated natively to lemmy

I've had the ActivityPub plugin active on this blog for a while now and it's been happily federating to mastodon for just as long. However it never worked on lemmy, and I always assumed it was just not set for it and was primarily focused on microblogging since lemmy was not even mentioned in the [...]

A Division by Zer0
@paul @Kilian @sophie @adactio what about engagement? Looking at his Mastodon feed I'm seeing v few replies suggesting he just posts & forgets, which isn't ideal. Engaging across multiple platforms takes work (which is why I stick to one mostly)
@sophie Never understood the "Cross posting is bad" concept.
The internet is about communication? Why is it bad to communicate in multiple places?
@hazz223 @sophie High risk of talking to one’s self… and not in a good way.
@hazz223 @sophie Does communication work with cross-posting? I thought that was when your posts end up on multiple platforms but you only see replies on your native platform.
@LilithElina Really depends on the way you do it. I've seen some apps are coming out that enable cross posting, all feeds combined, and more.
@hazz223 @LilithElina If both sides use https://fed.brid.gy they're able to communicate. You don't need an app for that and you don't need a second account.
Bridgy Fed

@katzentratschen @hazz223 Yeah, but a lot of people have not bridges their account.
@LilithElina @hazz223 We're talking about two people in love "communicating exclusively over the fedi bridge".
@katzentratschen @hazz223 @LilithElina so if i use brid.gy, do i open up a portal of evil to my home instance? i'm not quite clear on the techy details.

@rothko @hazz223 @LilithElina No other users on your home instance or any other instance are affected if you bridge your account – unless they bridge their account, too. If you boost a post of an un-bridged account, it won't show up on Bluesky. It's strictly opt-in.

@rothko @hazz223 @LilithElina Just compare my bridged profile page

https://bsky.app/profile/katzentratschen.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy

with my original profile page

https://mastodon.social/@katzentratschen

Moreover, only public posts are bridged.

@katzentratschen @hazz223 @LilithElina thank you!!! a group of old friends on FB is ditching it for bluesky and i'm all thanks but no thanks. this is helpful.
@katzentratschen @hazz223 @LilithElina so if i boost a post from someone over here, will it show up for any bluesky users that follow me here?
@rothko @hazz223 @LilithElina If and only if this someone bridges their account. Therefore OP's post doesn't show up on Bluesky.
@hazz223 @sophie only thing I can think of is often people who post using a cross posting tool don't then engage in conversations because the tool they use is a posting tool not a reading and replying tool. The only thing they read is their follow counts.
@hazz223 @sophie Terrible engagement for followers on whichever platform you crosspost to. Feels like a bot rather than you in person.
@timrichards @hazz223 @sophie
There are people and NGOs or institutions which can't but crossposting. It's also a matter of time! So please do not follow folks doing so if you do not like crossposting! If you can't detect bots because you never check profiles, leave the social networks! Bye!
@vegos_f06 @hazz223 @sophie Or maybe don't post to a platform if you don't have time to engage with followers there?
@hazz223 @sophie
It's that BSky and Twitter feeders are full of misinformation, lots of russians.
@hazz223 @sophie It’s not cross posting I object to as much as cross maintaining multiple accounts because the people I want to follow are scattered over multiple services.

@hazz223 @sophie I think it's less about cross posting in general and more about "nothing but cross posting". Meaning no engagement with the replies, the post itself usually being cut off in the middle due to different character limits on different social media platforms, hashtags from one platform not making any sense on the other... There might also be a lack of platform specific things, like an alt text for images. To me this makes an account look like the person behind it doesn't give a damn about the people appreciating them or looking up to them at whatever platform is not their main one.

Cross posting in itself is in my opinion a great tool to spread out your content more, to make your stuff more accessible and save you some work. Please use it! Just be smart about it, double check if you might need to make some adjustments to make it suitable for a platform, and check your comments once in a while. :)

@sophie 👍 own site with cross-posting
@sophie it's the LinkedIn/Fediverse crossposters that tickle me. @jasongorman posting provocative software engineering questions that work just as well here as on LinkedIn
@sophie people who think the other platform is bad for sure are going to think that crossposting is also bad.
@sophie I cross post. People splintered themselves to different, yet similar, services, I’m just trying to talk about dumb things I enjoy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@sophie Crossposting without the possibility of communication is the sound of one hand clapping - might as well read a book.
@sophie I mean, I don't much care for it, but if people want to talk about crosses, who am I to yuck their yum? :)

@sophie

the unspoken truth everybody acknowledges before they drink the poison:

social media is problematic

Federation is the future of social media, says Bluesky CEO Jay Graber

@sophie Can't we just turn on federation and everybody lives in their own instance but can chat with each other?

Is this too much to ask? 😢

@ricard @sophie It is not that simple! You can do that with Threads.net and with Bluesky if your instance allows it. But there is way more to crosspost. I also cannot order them which network to use or not.

@vegos_f06 I think it is that simple, if they wanted to.

Currently, can't be done. But they could do that, follow and implement the standard protocols.

I assume they just don't want to. Their business relies on people being in a walled garden to serve ads, etc.

Crossposting is nice to get the word out but I want interaction not just broadcasting.

@sophie "... But what finally brought them together was a mutual disdain for Threads..."
@sophie

I'm happy on Misskey myself.
@sophie If I can’t tap dance in a tight triangular formation with my homies while snapping my fingers and promising to finish blue sky in song… what’s the point? 😜

@sophie
Note to self:

* Develop a software bridge that acts as a condom between the two communities.

* Profit.

@sophie

But... Will the soundtrack at least still be a banger?

@ishambard @sophie When you toot, you toot all the way, from your first instance to your last federation...

@sophie

That would require folks actually enabling the bridge. *headdesk*

@sophie Ask not what Mastodon can do for you, ask what you can do to improve the Mastodon experience. All people communicating is a bane to the incoming administration.

@sophie

More like a low budget version of "The Warriors"

Where the Mastodons travel to a meeting with their fellow social groups to discuss taking over all social media.

The Threads set up this meeting to discuss a truce with their fellow social media platforms.

Most of the social media owners applaud this idea, but Elon, the unbalanced and sadistic leader of X shoots Kazi dead as police officers arrive to raid the summit

Elon blames Mastodon for the killing and we get to see the group try to escape.

With a pivotal scene scene of a crazed Elon clicking red bull cans as he taunts the Mastotons with the line.

"Mastodons come out and Toot"

@sophie BlueSky must die!

@sophie

I'm up for a dance fight if y'all are.

@sophie hilariously, on Bluesky, I hardly see Mastodon come up.

Over here, though… People have *lots* to say about Bluesky.

@keenan @sophie Yep, same observation here.
@keenan @sophie Could be because here the users to instance ratio is about 333:1 and 19 000 000:1 there.
@sophie fragmentation is bad in this case, where user might miss information and people.
