Snow (plowing) season has finally started in Oulu 🇫🇮 😍 2 cm of new snowfall must always be gone within 3 hours on entire 166 km main 🚲🚶 network, 24/7. So, maintenance needs to be fast, reliable & efficient 👌 Join our Oulu Urbanism Masterclasses to learn more! 🤗 (vertical video, recommended to open full screen)

In addition to the 2 cm threshold, 4 cm accumulation of snow must never be reached, not even for a second, on the main network. The rest of the ~1000 km network of bicycle & foot paths in the city are naturally maintained at top priority as well 👌

Allow me to tag the german ministry of traffic @bmdv here. THIS is how to do proper cycling infrastructure.

@jakob_thoboell @bmdv Absolutely. We would also be happy to welcome a delegation from Germany to our next Masterclass, scheduled for 5-7 Feb 2025 👌
Our next Masterclass is scheduled for 5-7 February 2025. There are still places left, so head on to masterclass.city and secure your spot 🤗
@pekkatahkola Were you - or whoever was filming - on a bicycle? Kind of the security escort? Is that always the case?
The plough we going rather speedily...
@rcr Yup, I was on my bike. About 30 km/h here, until we had to slow down because of that another bicycle in front of the plow, whom I asked to move to the other side, so that the plow driver could pass.
@pekkatahkola seems like a difficult job
@meercat0 Driving the plow tractor or chasing one by bicycle? ;)
@pekkatahkola I meant the snowplower’s job, but of course chasing one on bike seems dangerous too🙂
@meercat0 Haha yeah it's not easy. Here's one of my livestreams where I hopped in one of the plow tractors, so that might be interesting to watch?

Winter maintenance livestream - how we maintain our bicycle paths in Oulu, Finland

@pekkatahkola @Ramonsta72 nice video! Which camera do you use?
@kater_s @Ramonsta72 I'm filming handheld on my old Sony Xperia 5 II phone.
@pekkatahkola that's amazing. Wish we could do that in Iceland also. Never seems to be any budget for that.
But the thing about biking in winter is not so much the amount of snow, but how slippery it gets. I have some friends that use studded tires and bike all year long. Is that also used in Finland?
I now live in Aalborg, Denmark, which has totally different conditions for winter biking and seems to be as good as Oulu in clearing up the bike lanes.
