Dear #disability fediverse, what are the terms for 'disability' and 'people with disabilities' in #Hindi and #Urdu, as preferred by those with disabilities?

(NOTE: I'm aware of 'vikalang' - crippled limb, and 'divyang' - divine limb. Both are exonyms and deeply problematic.)

@subhapa I'm aware of the older 'apahij'. I don't know whether that too is an exonym.

Couple of other thoughts:
There may be more acceptable terms that are specific to the disabilities.
Social behaviour can turn even preferred terms into problematic labels over time (e.g. Dalit)

@ab I did remember 'apahij' but didn't know the literal meaning well. Does is mean "crippled limb" by any chance? Exonym is not so much a problem compared to derogatory or condescending ones. Didn't get what you wrote about the term 'dalit'. Can you clarify?
@subhapa I didn't know the meaning or the etymology. Wiktionary has some details: https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E0%A4%85%E0%A4%AA%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%B9%E0%A4%9C

@subhapa regarding Dalit, I feel the terminology section here captures some of understanding. The term was adopted and popularised to self identify with a name other than what the higher casts used. But over time it has become politicised and stigmatised. This is evident in it's use as a slur and a discriminant.

Similarly, once a self identifying term by disabled folks gains enough use, it might end up being equally used to discriminate against them.

Dalit - Wikipedia

@ab the Wikipedia article could be reductive. Dalit as a term is actively used by dalits themselves. There is nothing wrong with politicization. How else people would affirm identity and seek social justice? Political reform might be one of the most important paths for socio-economic justice.
@ab what "might" happen is never the issue. My question was about dignified, non-condenscending, and preferably, endonyms that might be in practice. All names by design can potentially be misused. But derogatory and condescending terms pose a much bigger problem.
@ab yeah, I saw this too after posting. In a similar tangent with 'vikalang'.
