70 years ago, polio was one of the most feared diseases in the US. Children from Arsenal Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA received the 1st injections of the new polio vaccine dev. by Dr Salk in 1954.

Just saw 'Tanaquil Le Clercq: Afternoon of a Faun' on PBS abt amazing ballerina cast in her 1st role at 15 by Balanchine (later married) who choreographed #ballets for her, as did Jerome Robbins & Merce Cunningham.

B4 Euro tour in 1956 the company got Salk #vaccine, except Tanny, who wanted to wait, bc it might affect her dancing that night. On the tour she came down w/ #polio, never walked again.
