Bluesky is the Microsoft Word of social media, which I mean in the derogatory sense, as the fediverse is the LaTeX of social media, which I also mean in the derogatory sense
Put your hand in the hbox, Paul. The box contains badness 10,000. I hold at your neck the Gom Jabbar
@liamvhogan Uh hold up there, have you checked that Paul is over 16?
@mike @liamvhogan you’re not allowed to let the fear pass over and through you for another year Paul, the government says so,
@s0 @liamvhogan the Bene Gesserit have approached the government with concerns that not being allowed to put the hands of children into pain boxes and stab them in the neck with poison needles may be a violation of their religious freedoms, and the legislation is now on hold.
@mike @liamvhogan we’d better give them dedicated weekly access to primary school students then, to be on the safe side
@liamvhogan I'm in this post and I don't like it.
@liamvhogan I can't put anything in the hbox, it's overfull.
@liamvhogan this is exactly what it feels like
@liamvhogan if it's got that much badness can't we just put our hand next to the hbox
@ireneista @liamvhogan if it's got that much badness I don't think you get to choose where TeX puts your hand
@liamvhogan
I fight you with my crude weapons \sloppy and \emergencystretch!
@Lapizistik @liamvhogan I'm so, so glad I don't try to use it anymore to the point that I don't know those two :)
@liamvhogan this reminds me of the time I tried the mouthwash in the gents at work
@liamvhogan I think this all aligns with the fact that Facebook remains the Facebook of social media.
@mike @liamvhogan I doubled back on “aligns” and started looking for the LaTeX joke I must’ve missed.

@mike @liamvhogan facebook might be the myspace of social media though https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myspace

Myspace saw a consistent loss of membership around 2008

@liamvhogan Now googling LaTeX
@timrichards @liamvhogan ugh one of the first lessons of latex is careful about your google searches
@julie @timrichards @liamvhogan sits alongside GIMP in the “software that would have wider adoption if it didn’t have such a stupid name” stakes
@ThermiteBeGiants @julie @timrichards @liamvhogan +90% of mankind has no problem with those names 🤔
@ThermiteBeGiants @julie @timrichards @liamvhogan whats wrong with the GIMP's name? i always thought it was short and beautiful

@julie @timrichards @liamvhogan one of my classmates was using LaTeX for their homework and needed to use the card suit symbols, so searched for “latex suits”

… while sitting in the front row of class

@ShadSterling @julie @timrichards @liamvhogan Back in 2005, when writing up my master thesis, in the lab, I needed a function for "substrings".

@ShadSterling @julie @timrichards @liamvhogan

Just before I started my teacher training I had a short placement in a primary school. During a history lesson on Queen Victoria the teacher did an image search for "Prince Albert" on the interactive whiteboard. Safesearch was off.

@martinpallmann
I will never forget that teacher's face, his double-take, and how he ripped the VGA cable out of the back of the computer.
@ShadSterling @liamvhogan @julie @timrichards
@TeaKayB @martinpallmann @ShadSterling @liamvhogan @julie @timrichards it's a sad state of affairs when a person has reached adulthood without developing the ctrl-w close tab muscle memory
@jackeric
He was closer to the cable than he was to the keyboard at the time.
@martinpallmann @ShadSterling @liamvhogan @julie @timrichards
@TeaKayB @jackeric @martinpallmann @liamvhogan @julie @timrichards I would always screw in my VGA plugs. I hope that hadn’t been done in this case
@ShadSterling @TeaKayB @jackeric @martinpallmann @liamvhogan @julie @timrichards
Ask me why I developed the "don't screw in the VGA plugs" muscle memory.
@dec23k
I learnt not to do that via a completely different dilemma... When I unscrewed one but it unscrewed on the wrong side, requiring opening up the case to re-attach the plug.
@ShadSterling @TeaKayB @jackeric @martinpallmann @liamvhogan @julie @timrichards
@TeaKayB @liamvhogan @julie @timrichards @ShadSterling but this is how you learn and how the greatest inventions came to life: by accident discovery.
Before you continue to YouTube

@julie @timrichards @liamvhogan It works better if you type the "X" as "Χ" and not "X".

@timrichards @liamvhogan It’s as boring as it sounds. 🤣

Unless you’re an academic who likes to typeset their own papers for publication. Then, it’s amazing!

@ramsey @timrichards @liamvhogan LaTeX has always made me think nsfw type uh... imagery.

@timrichards @liamvhogan While you’re at it, also check the more modern typst:

#LaTeX #Typst

@timrichards @liamvhogan if you want a more modern version of the basic (excellent) idea, look at Basser Lout or typst
@liamvhogan I have reset my internal "days since I last thought about Computer Modern Roman" counter
@liamvhogan So, I guess it's vi then.
@liamvhogan Why do people make a vakrimpta punim (literally "crooked face") whenever I ask "vi or emacs?" You'd think I was asking "boxers or briefs or boxer briefs?"
@liamvhogan @jenn I’m still searching for the troff of social media.
@a @liamvhogan @jenn anyone wanna write a fedi client in AWK?

I'd rather write one with a Makefile.

@beige_alert @a @liamvhogan @jenn

@danjones000 @beige_alert @liamvhogan @jenn I’ve done mkfiles to turn twtxt files and a list of finger addresses into web feeds; does that count? :-)
@a @liamvhogan @jenn Usenet obviously (in the derogatory sense)
@cybertailor @liamvhogan @jenn Ooo. This is a good answer (aside from there being anything negative about troff).
@liamvhogan oh geez LaTex. X.x never again
@liamvhogan is there a WordPerfect 5.1 of social media?
