To my #Linux friends out there: I have two questions (for two different laptops).

Question #1: Linux Mint 21 freezes regularly on a new Dell laptop (less than a year), it was problematic from the beginning because with one kernel (6.something) the WIFI did not work and with the other kernel (5.something) I have the freezing issue. Is there another dispo which works better with Dell laptops? I would need an easy-to-use dispo because I am still new at Linux and have vision problems.

This laptop is at work and I am at home right now so I can't give you any specs. :(

Question #2 is about installing a different keyboard layout on my home laptop. Mint works super. What I want is a #phonetic #keyboard. I have downloaded and installed keyman and the IPA keyboard-thingy recommended by UCL Phonetics department. So far so good, I can't seem to get it to work. What do I have to do?

@meow_factor maybe try a Fedora based distro? I personally use the Fedora KDE spin and I've had 0 issues. https://fedoraproject.org/spins/kde/
Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop

The Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop Edition is a powerful Fedora-based operating system utilizing the KDE Plasma Desktop as the main user interface. Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop comes with many pre-selected top quality applications that suit all modern desktop use cases - from online communication like web browsing, instant messaging and electronic mail correspondence, through multimedia and entertainment, to an advanced productivity suite, including office applications and enterprise grade personal information management. All KDE applications are well integrated, with a similar look and feel and an easy to use interface, accompanied by an outstanding graphical appearance.

@chirpbirb I'll have to try that, thanks. I really love Linux because it is really good and no nonsense.

By the way, cool instance meow.social :)

@chirpbirb That distro looks awesome! I'll try that one on my home laptop purrhaps

@meow_factor These things are usually bound to just kernel (it contains all drivers except for GPUs which have both kernel and out-of-kernel pieces) so the newest kernel you can get has the biggest chance to help..

There are no distros which have better support for certain laptop manufacturer.

Maybe go for something more bleeding edge, like Fedora or Manjaro, who ship very new kernels. Conservative distros (I do count Mint as one of them) don't play well with new hardware for this very reason.

@mana_z thank you, I have now upgraded to Mint 22 and I'll just wait. If that does not work out, I'll switch to Fedora
@meow_factor Try upgrading to the current version of Mint, 22. Instructions are on their site. That will include a newer kernel, etc. The kernel in 21 may be older than that laptop.

@Corb_The_Lesser I have just done that, upgrading was really easy, now I just have to wait and see if freezing happens again.

It seems as if mouse and keyboard react quicker - but maybe that's just my imagination :)

@meow_factor
Freezing often (at least ime) results from a shortage of ram. If the laptop freezes when you are doing nothing in particular, perhaps you could try dropping back to a lightweight window manager such as xfce (even if just as a test).
@paulkinsler thanks, I have now upgraded to Mint 22 and I'll wait and see if freezing happens again. And then I'll try downgrading to a lighter version
