Back to 1:35 #ScaleModeling with a #DragonModels Schwere Wurframen 41 with a crew of five figures. Painting those is pre-stressing me boatloads.

The wooden A-frame had lots of ejector marks etc, and apparently no woodgrain texture. This allowed me to try out another NightShift trick: carving the woodgrain with a metal-bristled brush. The result was going to be verified after painting.

Four rockets, 280mm and 320mm, got PE crates that also stressed me a bit in advance. Promising start, hm? #WIP

Most of the hobby time since the last toot/post/whatnot has been spent on swearing at PE bits. I lack the optimal tools, so they ended up wonky at best.

Painting may hide some crimes on them, I hope! On the other hand the #OilPainting woodlike effect on the plastic may habe worked. We'll see better when the paint has dried.

#ScaleModeling #Nebelwerfer #DragonModels #WorkInProgress

I started my attempt in painting my grayscaled little Germans in living colour: first a thin layer of VMC Middle Fleshtone, whatever that is, and some AK's Mahogany on their boots. I hope my VMC Chocolate Brown isn't dried up yet, it'd be a more suitable shade for boots.

Then I'll try to paint the winter pants white, and the coats in Splintertarn. That'll be difficult with me attempting to dilute paints down to filters. #MiniaturePainting #NewTricks #ScaleModeling

Some progress on the attempted Splintertarn-side out winter coat, exposed skin, boots and the helmet. The sandy yellow definitely needs more work, and I should add a green layer on the helmets.

And then there's the snow trousers and hoods, the M41 tunic with Waffenfarben, belts and who knows what else.

Maybe they'll end up semidecent humanoids. Maybe not.

#ScaleModeling #MiniaturePainting #WorkInProgress

This has been surprisingly fun, I have you know :D

I added some green to the helmets, painted the visible parts of the M41 tunics green, added super thin black over the belt and on one pair of boots. The snow sides of the winter coats and pants got painted white, it shows surprisingly well.

Another white and sandy layer is needed in places, and some unstarted details. So far so good, I'm unusually pleased with this progress.

#ScaleModeling #MiniaturePainting #WorkInProgress #NewTricks

Small tweaks today: belts, helmet straps, red-grey Waffenfarben on the collars, belt buckles highlighted with steel, and the boss guy's wrist watch. Black band and steel body, tomorrow I'll give it a black face again.

I also touched up the sandy parts of the camo, and did a new snow layer. I mostly am missing the faces anymore. And an oil wash some time later. Progress is nice and the painting method has been fun, if a bit weird :P

#ScaleModeling #MiniaturePainting #WorkInProgress

Finished the launcher frame's fake wood #OilPainting yesterday and left the thing to dry in the (unheated) sauna for a week or two, in its box to protect it from dust.

Attempting the knots and branch weaves didn't work out too well in these narrow-as-crap pieces, but I'll try again somewhere else.

Now I've got to finish the rockets and maybe attempt to come up with a scratchbuilt scenic base for any of this to make any sense 😅

#ScaleModeling #Nebelwerfer #DragonModels #502Abteilung

While the oil paints were drying I found a slab of Finnfoam (XPS) that was left over from a tiny asteroid base made in 2011. My #diorama skills are nonexistent but I felt like giving this a shot.

The ground is going to be weird, but better than a flat piece of styrene.

I made some grooves for the launcher, carved off some edges, and drew a line for a bump. The circles with pluses were just the way we planned enemy placements in our Doom wads back in the day, in case someone wondersm #WIP

The 1:35 rocket launcher #diorama attempt progresses slowly. The surface needs more texture: sand/gravel, mud, and patches of snow to justify the partial winter camo.

It'll be weird but with the primer this already looks much better. And that is a huge relief 😅

#ScaleModeling #DragonModels #WorkInProgress #Nebelwerfer

Slow progress with the #diorama, as I somehow covered the base edges with styrene sheet, trimmed to shape, sealed over days with white glue. Topsoil got some ballast on glue -treatment m.

Yesterday I hid the criminally ugly corners with L-shaped styrene bits, primed all and blasted some brownish over the ground, sides painted dark grey as the last step. Next up: mud and stuff to improve the looks.

#DragonModels #Nebelwerfer #ScaleModeling

The rocket launcher #diorama after several layers of muds and snow. I think the key change was the application of "black mud" behind the rack to represent rocket-soot -stained ground.

Some more tweaking and a few puddles are needed, otherwise it's looking quite miserable. As it should be. Blech!

#ScaleModeling #Nebelwerfer #DragonModels #WorkInProgress

Last - or one of the last #WorkInProgress pics of the #Nebelwerfer #diorama, where I plopped th dudes and rocketry in place.

I'll use some more mud and/or snow by their feet and the equipment to make them belong a bit better still. Then I guess it's just some varnishing and cleanup of the sides before the final DSLR photos in a photo tent.

By the look of my calendar I won't get all that done before we travel to the in-laws, so wrapping up happens in January, after vacation.

Right. Now I can promise this is the last #WorkInProgress photo of this #diorama. I'll get to shoot the final photos in January. For all intents and purposed my rocket launcher is now finished, no more silly ideas for this project 😅

A colleague (a designer) who's into WH40k said that his only/main complaint is the low saturation of the crew's winter gear. I had the same idea or hunch, Pyry just phrased it soo much better. Comes with the competence, I know 😄

@isd_d if i can mobilise trivets to becoming rocks, so can you make awesome out of this
@erikcats heh, thanks for the confidence! I have thought of puttying the ground for safety, then using Woodland Scenics' ballast for texture, maybe some gravel or tiny rocks too. And mud effects with some fake snow to justify my snowgear :D

@isd_d nice!

I generally use the cheapest crap as this hobby is expensive as is 😆 sounds like yours will look a lot better tho!

@erikcats it'll be weird, that's for sure, I just hope it ends up tolerable 😅
