I had to read this 3x to realize it wasn’t satire. #WompWomp

The Onion wins Alex Jones' Infowars in bankruptcy auction

The Onion, the satirical news company that repeatedly spoofed conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, has won the bankruptcy auction for control over his media empire — most notably Infowars, the far-right, conspiracy-minded website that served as Jones’ primary online platform.

@GottaLaff
Will regular Jones readers be able to tell the difference?
@mcpinson @GottaLaff "Customers". They're not big "readers".
@BonehouseWasps @GottaLaff
Granted, substituting one set of trolling, made-up, conspiracy theories for another will be a subtle difference for even the highest-of-IQ-customers.
@GottaLaff
See, this is the problem with the idiotic times we live in today. This looks like a story that would be in The Onion!
@Wileymiller @GottaLaff
They could start subtly and just keep the same structure - and over the course of a few months turn all of Jones' readers into woke social justice warriors.
@darthstar Probably wouldn't work. But, as long as they get the site's mailing list they can just keep selling them boner pills and use the money to finance the satire.
@Wileymiller "Not The Onion. ...I mean, yes, it IS The Onion, but it's not a joke. Wait, I mean, yes, it's a joke, and a really good one! But it's real." @GottaLaff
@GottaLaff TFW The Onion buys a paper and instantly makes it less satirical.
@GottaLaff The interesting question is: will Infowars current readers really notice that the website is now a branch of the Onion? 🤔
It's not like anything new that the onion can come up with and published on that website could be more outrageously untrue that what was there before :D
@StephaneHuart Such a good response

@GottaLaff @StephaneHuart

Intern: "I know! What if we did a story about fluoride in the water making frogs gay? Ha hahaha! Crazy, right?"

Rest of staff: *sigh*

@EdCates @GottaLaff @StephaneHuart running my college paper I had a writer who aspired to go to journalism school.

Their serious articles sounded like satire, and their attempts to write for our satire section sounded like incredibly boring serious articles.

I never followed up to see how their career unfolded but your gag just reminded me of that experience.

@StephaneHuart @GottaLaff Wait, this is real? There is an article in the WaPo indicating it's real, and while I've been quite unhappy with the WaPo lately, I don't think they've become a satire paper. Maybe, though... 🙄
@StephaneHuart @GottaLaff I just learned that the sandy Hook families will get shares in the new company so they will share in its success. I’m signing up as soon as it launches
@StephaneHuart @GottaLaff I think we have an answer, and the answer is, "No, they won't."
@StephaneHuart @GottaLaff so the take should be: put real news, let everyone believe them as they sound outrageous… like what they’re used to.
@StephaneHuart @GottaLaff Yeah, sadly, the absurdity of reality has largely outpaced the Onion’s own absurdity in recent years. I’m still a big Onion fan though; I hope this purchase ends up benefiting them.

@StephaneHuart @GottaLaff there will be less supplement ads

Although maybe they'll have some fun ones

"Are you so unmanly that you need to get confidence from bottles of pills and powders? GroundOnionz is for you. It's the only supplement that is 100% ground onions ( and maybe some wasabe and cayenne ). A snort or two a day will remind you that you're alive!!!"

@GottaLaff

This is like when The KLF burned a million pounds in currency.

@GottaLaff finally some good fucking news

@GottaLaff
😮 Fantastic. I want to see a stream from the Onion's offices when they got the news!

Oh may they have the skill to do it in a way that regular readers don't notice at first. Can we gently de-program them this way?

@GottaLaff the Onion wins the day with the best news possibly ever! Hahaha!
@GottaLaff ...this is the best news I have heard all week.

@GottaLaff The writers at The Onion are extremely clever and malevolently cynical.

infowars.com could become an excellent honeytrap for conspiracy theorists, incels, 3%ers, ProudBois, wannabe Nazis, and other violent MAGAt groups.

Then they just sweep up their personal contact info, track 'em back to their homes + jobs ... and doxx the fuck outta them. 🤔

Twill be interesting to see their ads for 'nad tanning, survival rations, and tactical pens. 😎

@GottaLaff That's some joke ebay bidding war gone badly...

@GottaLaff

This more than anything convinces me that we live in a post-satire world.

@GottaLaff The important question is, did Dan and Jordan from Knowledge Fight! get Alex's desk?!?
@GottaLaff This is just sheer poetry.
@GottaLaff bwhahaha this is just epic!
@GottaLaff when it comes to the Onion and indeed Alex Jones you just never know!
@GottaLaff I love this so much!
@GottaLaff
I truly thought it was The Onion just being The Onion!

@GottaLaff

That is awesome. And it had to be approved by a judge so you know he's just giggling about it the whole time.

@GottaLaff we live in such strange times :D
@GottaLaff This is fxcking awesome 🔥🔥🔥🔥
@GottaLaff This is glorious and I love it.

@GottaLaff Would be worth only to troll Jones I guess

Or linking it to Ricky would be fun   But this seems a good way

@GottaLaff I've been thinking about this story the last couple hours...

It really feels as if The Onion has rode in to save our collective emotional health for the next 4 years!

@GottaLaff
"The anti-violence organization Everytown for Gun Safety said it will be the exclusive advertiser in The Onion’s new venture as part of a multiyear agreement."
@GottaLaff A little good news goes a long way. Just super...😎

@GottaLaff From The Onion:

"...a formidable special interest group has outwitted the hapless owner of InfoWars (a forgettable man with an already-forgotten name)"

Glorious.

@GottaLaff

Thank you - so much.

This is the first positive thing I've seen (regarding regulations, law, government, capitalism, etc) on Mastodon since the election.

Good for the Onion!

@GottaLaff

I had to web search for independent verification.

Well done The Onion, they have out-Onioned themselves.

@Edelruth I don’t post fake news. I verify sources before posting.
