Her team was interested in why people so seldom use tools like Allsides.com to see news with different ideological points of view. NewsGuesser leverages curiosity and gamification to reduce selective exposure, helping people encounter a broader range of news online.
They created a quiz with three stories on three different topics from left, right and center-leaning sources, and invited 40 participants (L,R,C and Independent) to guess the ideological basis of each. People are terrible at this - participants got 2.4 correct out of 9 stories. It's a useful provocation that most news (not opinion) is pretty factual. The problem with the tool is that, at present, it's too hard for most users!
