I coined the phrase "moral austerity" to refer to the white liberal idea that human rights and social justice issues can be trimmed back -- at no expense to themselves, of course -- during hard times, politically.
Too many people believe in a zero sum game where the only voters worth winning and pursuing are white voters, and in this equation, rights for marginalized groups are not moral goods but "indulgences" to be withdrawn in order to secure more white support. They will describe this as "pragmatism" even when it doesn't win elections because they have no principles.
@gwynnion HOLY FUCKING SHIT. That captures the attitude totally. Thank you.
@gwynnion There is likely to be a lot of austerity real soon, moral austerity leading to austerity to thee not for me. Time to prepare for it, I don't think hoping social supports will retain resilience through this is a good bet. We have to have our needs sorted and hopefully have enough to help others.
The country just voted to throw the remains of the social contract in the incinerator.
@gwynnion a phrase I didn't know i required but one that I can put to work immediately.

@gwynnion

They may be fiscally kind of conservative but at least they are socially— hold on WHAT???

Ok if not for the social liberal values what exactly is on offer? More polite about the racism and transphobia? What is the goddammed point?

@gwynnion Guilt. Guilt is a bad things because you must live with your mistakes. Collective Guilt is worse ( ask about It in Germany or Ruanda. For example). The actual elites até old. It's a gerontocracy. They Will die dening their mistakes, or how much irracional their prejudicar were. They Lost NOTHING with social advances that they allways defender. They don't want the judment and the Guilt.
