Nowhere GirlI coined the phrase "moral austerity" to refer to the white liberal idea that human rights and social justice issues can be trimmed back -- at no expense to themselves, of course -- during hard times, politically.
Too many people believe in a zero sum game where the only voters worth winning and pursuing are white voters, and in this equation, rights for marginalized groups are not moral goods but "indulgences" to be withdrawn in order to secure more white support. They will describe this as "pragmatism" even when it doesn't win elections because they have no principles.

WanderingVoron@gwynnion There is likely to be a lot of austerity real soon, moral austerity leading to austerity to thee not for me. Time to prepare for it, I don't think hoping social supports will retain resilience through this is a good bet. We have to have our needs sorted and hopefully have enough to help others.

They don't want the judment and the Guilt.
