I don’t want to see that on Mastodon, in the same way I wouldn’t have wanted the blogosphere to go mainstream — plus, in both cases ‘normal’ people don’t want that either. I’m definitely curious about Bluesky and how much it can scale, because ultimately they’re trying to take users from X (which I support). But do I want the stress of trying to get on all those Starter Packs to “build my following” etc…I’ll reluctantly try on Bluesky, but I don’t want that for Mastodon! https://fosstodon.org/@AkaSci/113467803457395611

Wouldn't it be great to see the headline "Mastodon adds 700,000 new users in a week?" What will it take? https://www.theverge.com/2024/11/11/24293920/bluesky-700000-new-users-week-x-threads @[email protected] @[email protected]

@ricmac I feel a bit differently about it. I wish more people—the more the merrier—would come to Mastodon. As much as I value the new community I’m finding here, it is diminished from my former Twitter experience and more homogeneous. Many of my old Twitter friends just can’t, or won’t, make the leap, because it’s seen as technically challenging. I miss them.
@gleick Just curious James, what are your thoughts on Bluesky? It does seem to be where the Twitter people are going, for good or worse — and it has that old Twitter vibe. I think it has a good chance of scaling quickly, because it’s basically built for that. BUT it’s not fully decentralized and it’s owned by a corporation, so the same risks apply as for Twitter.
@ricmac I’m with @pluralistic on Bluesky. I wish it could be trusted. But, as you say, it’s privately owned, and it won’t serve its users’ interests in the long term. Cory says it better than I can: https://pluralistic.net/2024/11/02/ulysses-pact/

@gleick @ricmac @pluralistic not only that but it was recently bought by Blockchain Capital (crypto bros with many criminal ties, including to Trump's transition team chairman), no doubt to expand the reach of their get-rich-quick propaganda. Moving from Twitter to that app is a huge mistake. It's only a matter of time before it goes the same way as Twitter.

@gleick @ricmac @pluralistic I think it's great.I see all kinds of dialogue, no BS and no censoring crap on behalf of fascism.

@Bellison22 @gleick @ricmac @pluralistic it's probably the best refuge for most folks dissatisfied with Twitter for now.

Likely that'll change further down the road

@Jam123 @gleick @ricmac @pluralistic likely a whole lot will change as of January. Tons of Twitter people flooding Threads but that's owned by Suckerberg.
