Riding the 2014 #xtracycle bbs02 #edgerunner more often lately, thinking maybe I should get a #GrinMAC motor for the rear of it, possibly a new bigger battery and update some parts. It's just such a dependable old truck but the rear is a little flexible when youngest+spouse are both on it. 11yo prefers the #supercargo / #umbrellaBike & 13yo is too heavy to not be pedaling so we end up on the #bikeFriday tandem more. Crowded in the garage though #nPlus1Problems #BikeTooter #eBikes #cargoBikes
If the #madsen was more suited to a adult passengers off-the-shelf, I would have one by now but still maybe couldn't part with the xtracycle. The dual motor is the other thing, where a bbs02 by itself, even with my absurdly low gearing where the 10sp 11-42 cassette is spun-out well before 25mph, is not enough for the steepest hills and has no regen braking, but the only thru-axle option is the direct drive "all-axle" and I don't think that has the torque I need here, for going or stopping.
I need somebody to weld me a tandem with about 7.5ft of continuous top tube, 20x3 suspension fork under that fixed front rack, continues out the back as rear rack built like a longtail, and dutch seatpost + steering geometry.
@enobacon its a monster:
@jpanhans nice! Seat tube angles look a little steep and the top tube is too high for the stoker. Maybe it needs to curve up to clear the fork.
@enobacon oh yeah a lower top tube would lower the rear rack too which would be nice.
@enobacon I've also been thinking of getting a GRIN motor for my Edgerunner. The rear hub motor I put on it is wound for a 700c wheel so it doesn't have much oomph.
@Karstan There is also the slightly lighter + cheaper sx2 or eezee hubs, which both have regenBraking options, though they have the flatted oversized axle (doesn't match disk brake) + end wiring (gets busted) but maybe with the lower rails to protect it that would be okay. When is the freegen becoming an option?
@Karstan I'll note that I got the slow wind 20in for the tandem so it tops out at ~22 and I think I have field weakening enabled but only on the long downhill to BH-Hwy or Barbur into Tigard have I been near 25mph with it, which is pretty okay for that frame but it still cuts out if asked to oomph at 1mph so the second crank-drive thing is becoming more essential. I can also carry both kids or spouse + youngest on the tandem with the piccolo trailer bike, though IDK about over 15mph like that
@enobacon I dunno. I'm guessing they'll have it by summer of next year.

@enobacon
I'm wondering if I can brace an xtracycle Free Radical to carry a 200lb adult on the back. Their web page shows adults on the back of Xtracycles, but they don't list specs.

It looks like the weak point is the metal "hoop" on each side, from the axle up to the seat rails. I am thinking of filling that area with a sheet of plywood, cut to size. That would make the hoop impossible to collapse.

@NNN the edgerunner rear is supposed to be good for 200lb, but it gets wiggly if more than ~50 is behind the axle. I've never had an adapted one (free radical was the original kit, right?) but I would think it had a bit more stiffness from the rear triangle to the original dropouts. The passenger weight should be transferred mostly to the axle but you need the whole frame to stick with the front of the bike to keep it upright, and your stoker handlebar on the seat post probably helps.
@NNN If you do some bracing, remember there is suspension in the elastic flex range, that you may want to allow room for, plus extra to not smash any fingers if it might be a handhold.
