Toronto Star

'One could come to a Canadian border crossing and claim refugee status, if they can prove they have a well-founded fear of being persecuted as part of a targeted group.'

Figure this would apply to a significant number of people after yesterday.

@atomicker

For the present, at least, the U.S. is considered a safe country. Asylum claims by people who crossed into Canada from the U.S. are categorically denied.

For what it's worth, a U.S. passport holder can be a visitor in #Canada for 6 months. No visa needed, just show up.

Claim refugee status from inside Canada: Who can apply

@BlueDot In the linked article, a Toronto immigration lawyer 'said he is hearing from people who are deeply concerned with how the political climate in the U.S. could affect their freedoms, for example people who are transgendered who are worried about their medical treatments being cut off.' 1/2
@BlueDot U of T law professor says such claims are 'few and far between' and 'most' haven't succeeded. Looking forward, if Tr*mp makes good on half his threats, I could potentially see a situation similar to that during the Vietnam War, where Americans avoiding the draft were granted political asylum in Canada. 2/2
@atomicker Certainly would be a welcome change!
@atomicker What i always find ironic is when people say "I'd move to Canada but the climate is too severe," despite the fact that the US gets more tornados, more hurricanes (more powerful earthquakes; not climate of course but I am throwing it in.) Yes it can get cold in most of Canada during the winter, but this is predictable; get a coat!
@atomicker What they really need to know is that Canadian Conservatives are MAGA Republicans under a different name. Same ideology, same goals. Don’t come up here to escape and then make the mistake of voting Con. #NeverVoteConservative
@garrattguy Definitely. Hoping that the events of yesterday might galvanize the parts of Canada that have yet to be compromised by the cult. We'll see.
@atomicker @garrattguy I'm really hoping for y'alls sake. Much love from your neighbors down south :(
@CrisColor Thank you -- right back at you!
