One way this election affects me personally is that I could lose my health insurance through the ACA, which has allowed me to be self-employed all these years. For a refresher on what healthcare was like for freelancers pre-ACA, see this autobio comic from 2012. https://kffhealthnews.org/multimedia/open-letter-to-supreme-court-cartoon/

@jensorensen Pre-RomneyCare, I was paying $2500 a month for health insurance because of pre-existing conditions. And then I got sick...and my meds were $2000 a month.

I'm hoping all goes well for you 💜

@jensorensen
I was entirely denied health care due to an incident that happened to me in college. The denial was almost ten years later.

ACA isn't perfect, but getting rid of "pre-existing conditions" was a blessing to every person who needs health insurance.

The orange stain and his fellow fascists would be happy to see folks like me die.

@jensorensen so, um, given that 6 of those people are flat-out fascists and the other three don't do their obvious moral duty when in arm's reach of people like that with that much power, just exactly what is it that you think telling them about your situation will change?
@davidfetter I drew that in 2012 before the ACA ruling. Not addressing today's court.
@jensorensen that's helpful context, and thanks for taking the time to add it!

@jensorensen yes! Obamacare was a major improvement for everyone with a pre-existing condition, which means something like half of all Americans.

Reminder for everyone: According to a Yale study before the pandemic, about 68,000 Americans die every year due to lack of affordable healthcare. That's about 2.5% of all American deaths, none of whom would have died if we had single payer healthcare.

@jensorensen sadly, much of America doesn't get this: SinglePayer MedicareForAll 🙏🖖> public option 👍 > Obamacare / RomneyCare 👎 > pre-existing condition insurance purchase disqualification 😡🖕
U.S.A. Uncle Sam's AmeriCare: healthcare where and when you need, Uncle Sam pays the bills - expanded, enhanced MedicareForAll ✌️👍
@jensorensen
1) People who work for the government or have health insurance through their employer likely have no idea what it's like for freelancers
2) People likely don't know that folks with disqualifying pre-existing conditions would have to fill out an application to an insurance company in order TO GET DENIED and then be able to qualify for a high-risk pool plan

@jensorensen The ACA is not on the ballot this election, for better or worse.

Yes, there has been misinformation about this to scare people. We need to push back against that misinformation.

Whoever told you this was fear-mongering and manipulating you, and you should probably stop listening to them.

@volkris @jensorensen Say what? Trump and his minions tried repeatedly to destroy the ACA when he was in office, stated he would “replace it with something better”, a claim repeated this week by his republican house speaker. He will “replace” it with… a concept of a plan. How on earth is it not on the ballot?

@PFox so here's the thing, news flash, Trump says a lot of things that aren't true.

@jensorensen

@jensorensen

The doctors are all looking at each patient as income instead of people. When I had my acl repaired it didn't work, but I had to look to find a doctor that would actually look. He told me that the acl replacement was anchored in to broken bone originally, which was why my knee never worked right. He passed away (he was a real life Saint 😥) about 6 years ago. Since then I haven't been able to get any one to even read his notes. They just tell me "your fat, walk"

@jensorensen when I broke my knee, I was riding my bicycle 180 miles a week.
@Langhamian ACL tears are the worst. Fortunately I had a good surgeon -- your experience sounds terrible.

@jensorensen

The sheer explosion of entrepreneurs building anything and everything if we provided everyone quality healthcare outside of a job would break peoples minds.

@jensorensen is something unbeliveable for an European
@jensorensen Affects me too. I'm moving from employment to self-employment and have to pay over $1,500/mth for insurance premiums for three months in 2024 (on an insurance continuation plan) before I'll qualify for the ACA in 2025. I'm not sure how I'm going to afford it at this point. My only hope is that it will still be there when I can qualify next year. Also, my daughter's been on it for several years and it's meant so much to her.

@jensorensen I've had my Medicare Advantage insurance canceled *TWICE* within twelve months because of dispute between the insurer (United Health) and the medical provider - it had nothing to do with me.

So I ended up with pneumonia, a temperature of 104F, and uninsured. I was turned away from urgent care and had to go to the ER as uninsured.

Our US medical system sucks.
