Research finding from a longitudinal study in Germany: Cycling was the only variable that was a significant positive predictor for all four facets of orientation towards the common good: political participation, social participation in organizations, neighborhood solidarity, and neighborly helpfulness. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0272494423001731?fbclid=IwY2xjawGUlvxleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHWq93x7Avgwi5LdPV1Jv1GNhFFXAahHPHAr-2E_IqbcmXcPpR-hyPd77Pw_aem_C5dGAvBCR9gPkAzBIhDNUg

Orientation towards the common good in cities: The role of individual urban mobility behavior

Orientation towards the common good is considered as a building block of social cohesion and has been shown to benefit both social communities and the…

@BarbChamberlain

Now, the million dollar question is: are nice people more fond of cycling, or does cycling actually make you a nicer person?

@Marrekoo @BarbChamberlain Probably a bit of both. But that is the awful thing with observational studies. Very hard to take action from.

Annecdotally, on my commute to work I bike past the same lady with a dog many times a week. At this point we recognise each other. I feel more connected to that person and others in my community and city that I often see enough to recognize.

I have thankfully never commuted by car, but I suspect that you almost never have that kind of interaction.

@emil @Marrekoo @BarbChamberlain there is evidence that cycling reduces stress. Less stress helps when interacting with people. This gives one more energy to help. Also cycling makes one more active. This also helps to get one's ass off the couch and do something.

However, more active people may also turn more to cycling as it is a physical activity.

@prefec2 @emil @Marrekoo @BarbChamberlain the authors seem to focus on active perception and interaction of the surounding / environment, because a bicycle has no passenger cell. Their story in the literature review ends in this difference between car and bike.

@Marrekoo Maybe both? I read a study a while back that said action precedes attitude. So you don't love biking and start to do it; you start biking for whatever reason (health, economy, convenience, a new love interest does it, etc.) and come to love it.

@BarbChamberlain @Marrekoo

When we take actions, we change not only the world, but ourselves.

@BarbChamberlain das erklärt dann auch (indirekt) warum man in D. so sehr am Auto festhält.
@rhold Oh dear. Because they don't want community connection?
