In a world where enough women are searching “can my husband find out who I voted for” to make it trend in search engines and social media, there should never be a question again about the value of and right to end-to-end encrypted and private personal communication.

@Tarah

Workaround. Lie. Just say you voted for trump.

There will be no evidence that you lied.

@SpaceLifeForm @Tarah I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there are a lot of people who can’t lie convincingly, and the overlap between those who would need to and those in abusive relationships is pretty hefty.
@WhiteCatTamer And the Venn Diagram for those in abusive relationships and having an SO who is a MAGA is probably nearly a circle. @SpaceLifeForm @Tarah

@RegGuy @WhiteCatTamer @SpaceLifeForm @Tarah The commentary from the Trump campaign complaining about the Harris ads highlighting this are exactly the reason the vote being private is important. They appear to really think women are secondary to men. It's disgusting.

I'm all in for vote by mail, but I wish that didn't make me worry about controlling spouses dictating votes. I know there are some states when you can spoil your mailed vote and recast, but I couldn't find details for my state.

@rusozoll @WhiteCatTamer @SpaceLifeForm @Tarah In all states it's a provisional ballot that is counted only after it is shown your other one was invalidated.

@RegGuy @WhiteCatTamer @SpaceLifeForm @Tarah the part I couldn't find is if I mail on my ballot, how to cancel it. In the thread, it'd be in the case of a spouse voting by mail under duress, but also applicable if someone changed their mind.

I didn't see provisions to do that in UT, but found the process for Michigan (at least for primaries, but I'd assume it applies to general) fairly quickly. Their deadline should be tomorrow 2pm.

@rusozoll @WhiteCatTamer @SpaceLifeForm @Tarah I misunderstood your question. If the mail-in was spoiled then a provisional ballot would work. I do not know how one cancels an otherwise valid one.
@RegGuy filing this in my big stack of „things leftists like to believe about their peer group“ 🙄 @WhiteCatTamer @SpaceLifeForm @Tarah
@felixf @RegGuy @WhiteCatTamer @SpaceLifeForm @Tarah Leftists? You appear to be projecting your own prejudices. Coercive control of women by men happens everywhere and across the political spectrum. If you doubt it speak to any counselling professional. It's a gender issue not a political one.
@felixf MAGA are extreme radical and I meant it differently than you seem to have taken it. @WhiteCatTamer @SpaceLifeForm @Tarah
@RegGuy yes I believe that. (Specifically I believe the circular Venn diagram metaphor you chose is just not a good representation of what you meant to express)

@RegGuy
I don't know what you wanted to say but what you said is:
1. All MAGA supporters are abusive to their spouses.
2. All people abusive to their partners are MAGA supporters.

Neither of those statements is true and saying such things is damaging for the fight against domestic abuse.
Venn diagrams don't say anything about proportions, but about set relationships. It being "almost" a circle means it should be interpreted as it being a circle.

@felixf @WhiteCatTamer @SpaceLifeForm @Tarah

@WhiteCatTamer @SpaceLifeForm @Tarah I think I'd quite possibly come over like I was lying even if I had been successfully coerced into voting Trump, because my lack of belief in the act would show through.

I dread all the domestic violence that's going to come in the next few days if the Trump supporters don't get their way (though Trump still needs to lose, obviously). The media should be cautious about the narrative "women secretly voting Harris swung it", if she wins, since these men will land that on the women around them however they voted.
@WhiteCatTamer @SpaceLifeForm @Tarah In the UK (don't see why the US would be different), domestic abuse spikes even during major sporting events.
@SpaceLifeForm @Tarah and soon enough, if he wins, no evidence of voting in future elections at all

@SpaceLifeForm @Tarah There currently isn't.

But it does make one remember when people try to suggest that we follow Estonia and allow for internet voting, and the means to verify that you have voted online there.

That *might* allow cryptography familiar people to determine your vote.

Or social engineers - or someone using your own smartphone to see how you voted.

@SpaceLifeForm @Tarah That all said, the paper ballot approach tries to ensure that nobody can know both that *you* voted, *and* *who* you voted for. As I understand, they can only know one or the other, and if your ballot allows someone to determine that it was yours, it's considered spoiled for the purposes of a count.
@AT1ST @SpaceLifeForm @Tarah no, that allows them to vote for you using a RAT tool
@StOnSoftware @SpaceLifeForm @Tarah Ah, that makes it a bit better, yeah - a brief read of it on Wikipedia seemed to indicate you could read the previous vote as well as write a new vote.
@SpaceLifeForm @Tarah But isn't that the point of the search? If they have to lie, they're looking up if there's a way for them to be caught out on it. How is lying a workaround for making sure the thing you have to lie about is anonymous?

@kibrika @Tarah

It is a deflection tactic to avoid being attacked.

@Tarah
I totally agree, but the NSA doesn't.
@Tarah makes me worry about future mail-in ballot usage
@Tarah I love how the ad was not only effective to the viewer, it prompted reactionary outrage which multiplied its reach orders of magnitude more. .. my guess that was factored onto to script and production. Every step of the way, the Harris campaign has played the trump campaign and its reactionary pundits and indluencers like a fiddle.
@PaddyRoggins what ad?

@Tarah Who you vote for is nobodys business. Even your controlling fascist husband.
@Tarah I am unconvinced the fix to systemic power imbalances is a technical one. End to end encryption doesn't stop me from grabbing a phone from someone's hands. pay women more. Raise them to trust their gut and seek out allies. Make them President and CEO and full Professor. (And I use signal so I am not anti-crypto, but intimate relationships are intimate.)
@Tarah What is end-to-end encryption good for if couples share their PIN, FaceID etc.?
@Tarah Last I checked a couple years ago, data brokers thought my legal identity was a Republican, yet at the time I had voted for Joe Biden, lol. That is to say that sometimes they get which side you're on wrong.
@Tarah “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them.” ….attributed to Canadian author Margaret Atwood
@Tarah wait, who made that a question?

@Tarah
Just got a letter in the mail today from the state [of ohio] that who you voted for is private, but that you voted is public record.

FWIW.

@Tarah Agreed. ALSO as long as this is the case nobody can argue that "feminism is not needed anymore".
@Tarah
What a terrible question to have to ask.

@Tarah
End-to-end encryption foils outside attackers, but someone who wants to control their spouse will most probably have control of the spouse's phone and will therefore be an insider with access to the local decrypted info.

@Tarah Reading the entire thread, I get the impression that democracy in the USA is not the only broken thing. Seeing the 'trends' as a man, I am ashamed that women have to search for topics like that.

I am a German white guy who is over 50 years old. Alone, trying to imagine to force my beloved wife to vote for something I tell her makes me sick.

@Tarah wouldn't I question my relationship in this case?
@Tarah though this maybe also shows, marriages are overrated - why stay with someone who has you wonderign about this question? 😞
@Tarah are the answers accurate? Or AIbullshit? I am sad the question even needs to be asked.
@Tarah fun fact: if Windows recall ever comes out and they searched for this on a windows 11 computer, their husband could easily find it!

/s not a fun fact at ALL
@Tarah and the right to a mobile phone system that does not share your location constantly.
@Tarah Ironically, husbands cannot find out about the vote (if the wives do not tell them), but will be able to check their wives' search history in many cases.
@Tarah I think it also adds another question to be asked about schemes for digital voting. If you can verify your vote was both counted and correct, can your domestic partner also find out?
@Tarah Wenn das eine Frau googeln muss sollte sie sich ganz schnell scheiden lassen.
@Tarah I'm sorry I know you are making a serious point but my brain read your post with the movie trailer voice and I couldn't stop it
@Tarah I tried looking it up on trends.google about United States, and it doesn't look like it's trending for the last 30 days. I'm not very familiar with trends, is there a way to look up what you mean by that phrase trending?

@Tarah I think you pointed out exactly why E2E encryption needs to be banned, votes need to be public, and you can expect our beloved #GOP to be enacting the necessary changes in the near future. You know to control your chattel female at home.

Funny that the abusers have not started running ads pointing out how you can circumvent the secret vote even today. Potentially illegally, but then abusing your wife is illegal already, 🤷

@Tarah I tried to find a statistics in trend showing this, but without success.
I found multiple news articles bit nothing shows in trending.
@Tarah Ughhhh - indeed, but I'm even more worried about the 5th suggestion 😬
