Trust #CGPGrey to inform me that there is an upcoming referendum next week asking #Maine’s residents whether they should update their state flag to a variation of the original 1901 design instead of the current horrid seal-on-blue.

I actually quite like the proposed design and it’s way better than the current one. But it invites comparison with #SouthCarolina’s palmetto flag and #Lebanon’s 🇱🇧 cedar flag. Then again, it’s interesting that it is a variation of the original 1901 flag which was already good. It also helps that many Mainers and tourists kinda love the flag and it is popular in souvenir shops already. So it’s probably a foregone conclusion that Maine will vote “yes” on Question 5.

Finally, to provide a different point of view on this current movement to update various U.S. local flags, J.J. McCullough did a well-considered contrarian video following the adoption of #Minnesota’s flag.

There’s a lot that I agree with J.J. and that MN’s flag might just be a tad too minimalist. I actually prefer the original winning design with the tricolor bands and more distinctive star, but the new flag is a vast improvement over the original horrific design.

@seav meh. I love the new #mnflag. Huge improvent, and I find its component elements pleasing and meaningful.
