When I was a teenager in the 2000s I somehow got the opportunity to interview the drummer from Minor Threat for a hardcore zine.

I asked him for his advice for young musicians. He said “you’re not going to listen to this advice because you don’t think it’s cool, and one day you’ll regret it, but always wear earplugs.”

I didn’t listen.

Didn’t think it was cool.

Permanent ear damage by my mid 20s.

@Daojoan as a previous yout myself, we never listen because it's never cool until you lose whatever you had, then you beg and bargin for a FRACTION of what you had.

Protect your health kiddos, once it's gone, it's gone.

@Daojoan I have terrible eyesight, no smell and after having a tinnitus for two days after visiting a club I have decided to just skip loud music all together. It's not worth it.
@Daojoan
“I didn’t listen.”
Me neither.
And now we _can’t_ listen.
👂
@Daojoan Same here. Which upper-register key do yours ring in?

@Daojoan I was on the drum line in high school. "Too hardcore for earplugs." Hearing damage healed in time, and my hearing is actually quite good, but I have hypersensitivity to high-pitched sounds as a byproduct.

Also messed up my left wrist playing traditional grip

@Daojoan

I was fucked from the beginning, grew up around chainsaws and brush chippers. You can't screw up your ears at basement shows if your ears are already screwed up.

But seriously, for the sake of your future SOs wear some ear pro

@Daojoan I got in the habit when I was 21 or 22 because I'm half-blind and going fully deaf was just not the fate I wanted. I still did a TON of damage to my hearing before then, including spending an entire set next to the speakers for an up-and-coming thrash band ... I thought it was "neat" that I was deaf for three days after, but it stops being neat real fucking fast. I'm sorry you have to contend with hearing damage, it sucks. :-(
@Daojoan Good God I wish I could repost this a thousand times

@Daojoan

Here’s my take (the earplug advice bears out the drummer's point): People hear the saying, “Free advice is worth what you pay for it.” But the long version is “Free advice may be very valuable, but people often mistakenly gauge it’s value by what they pay for it.” Sometimes, we might dismiss good advice just because it didn't come with a price tag, overlooking its true worth.

Sorry, I was never a roady.

@Daojoan Yeah, I took this to heart late, but not too late...

In the before times, my coworkers would get so annoyed whenever I took a phone call. WFH has been such a boon for me, and everyone who had to sit w/in earshot of me almost shouting into my phone, like Lynch's character in Twin Peaks...

@Daojoan i got serious about ear plugs in my early 20s playing in bands and am lucky i did.

eventually i started being the "dad" that brought a jar of free ear plugs to all the shows we played.

some people did turn them down but many took them when offered.

@Daojoan I feel fortunately lucky in that regard.
I took drumming up when I was young, played a couple of times without it, my ears were in pain; my teacher forced me to get ear protection. Unfortunately, I've had an ear infection now for a while which has impaired hearing somewhat on the left side, but it is not too bad.

@Daojoan Am reminded of that time I was going to an industrial music festival in a German bunker - the folks I was visiting all pulled out their custom earplugs and were very worried that I didn't have anything. But were relieved when I pulled out cheap foam earplugs.

My adulting todo: get custom earplugs

No clue how you do that, actually.

#maschinenfest

@Daojoan this!

I had been playing in metal, punk, and hardcore bands for a number of years before finally wearing ear plugs. They were good in-ear shooting-range devices. But by that time it was too late. I have tinnitus, which is a horrible thing to live with.

@markwyner it’s so rough to look back on those choices hey

@Daojoan

Look for classical musician's earplugs. :D

They're designed to still let you hear the sounds, but reduce the level of impact on your eardrums.

Yes, the earplugs cost more as they are bespoke, but it's the same for all safety equipment. :D

The one thing that you should never skimp on, is the quality of safety equipment!

Get the best quality that you can afford!

Make no mistake, earplugs are safety protection for your ears. :D

@Daojoan even with earplugs, some bands play extremely loud, it's irresponsible, in France it's illegal to play at around 100db for more than 15 min, but everyone go beyond that limit
@Daojoan i dont even go listen to metal bands anymore, even tho I like metal, I know it will be a painful experience

@Daojoan
Anything that would have made you more likely to listen?

I can only imagine them giving you earplugs and telling you to wear them constantly for a few days.

Anything less is talking to a brick wall since the information (wear earplugs) isn’t accessible in that format (lectured by adults).

@Daojoan Going to gigs recently I’ve noticed that still hardly anyone wears earplugs. And the volume levels are astonishingly high. Physically painful without plugs in some cases. Since I’m mostly going to see old punk bands, I assume it’s because they’re all basically deaf now.
@paddyduke @Daojoan Yeah, I went to a metal show the other night: very few people with earplugs in and most were old folk like myself.
@Daojoan Very true. :( The excellent and under appreciated movie "Sound of Metal" is about a drummer in this situation that puts music above his health, and goes permanently deaf as a result.
@Daojoan I wish more sound engineers specifically would take this mindset! Especially at smaller gigs, I swear so often the person on the desk has just damaged their hearing through years of excessive exposure, and they run everything at what they consider to be a reasonable volume but it's just way too loud and they simply can't tell. But it damages everyone else's hearing and distorts everything! If I can hear the music more clearly with my ears plugged then what's the point?
@Daojoan I definitely should have wore earplugs to the one concert I went to, I think that did a number on my hearing. My excuse is it was pretty expensive and hard to get on short notice. I'll make sure to have some for next time though, whenever that ends up being.

edit: I heard good things about Eargasm, and they're not expensive as far as earplugs go, only like $60 or so. But I'm also paid like shit, so.
@Daojoan Oh, how I wish I could drill this into everyone who is a musician, machinist, woodworker, etc. Wear! Your! Ear! Protection!

@Daojoan haha 22 year old me put on ear protection, when working next to a cherry stone cleaner drum at a confiture factory, but didn't wear it when cleaning, because the safety supervisors were not there anymore.

that machine is as loud as an airplane. and it really messed up my hearing...

@Daojoan also, turn your headphones down! i escaped mostly unscathed from years of band practices and shows, i think, but then continued on blasting my ears at home and work.
@sabbatical @Daojoan I didn't abuse my hearing all that much. Nevertheless I now get to have a low-level 7KHz tone with me at all times. Fortunately I can still ignore it most of the time. When I'm writing about it is not one of those times. arghh.
@alan @Daojoan yeah i’m fortunate enough i can forget about mine most of the time too. the hearing loss is a little more annoying. hopefully it doesn’t get much worse for a few more years at least
@sabbatical I've always had weirdly differential hearing. My left ear is less sensitive than my right, but mostly in the range of human speech. For other frequencies it can perform better than my right. This has been the case since childhood, yet both ears perform well on auditory tests, and I still get irritated by a variety of things that produce high frequency tones that others younger than me can't hear. I have a spectrum analyzer app on my phone to prove that I'm not imagining them!
@alan hah, funny, i kinda have a similar issue with certain sounds really bothering me that arent harsh at all to others around me. could be psychological maybe though — for example if sounds in music are dissonant "in the wrong way" it feels like it physically hurts me (but i love the "right" kind of dissonance.)

@Daojoan

I offer the same advice to new motorcyclists. It's amazing how much damage wind noise in your helmet does. When I was young earplugs were only for weirdos. I wish I'd used them every ride.

They don't block noises you need to hear, just the incessant wind.

@Daojoan same. I make all my drumline students wear ear plugs now
@Daojoan @700Sachen so sorry to read about that.
For everyone who wants to get a glimpse into that, I recommend the movie „Sound of Metal“. I‘m fortunate not to have lost my hearing, but I imagine it being like that.
@Daojoan Drummer. Age 44. My ears have been ringing for 2 years. It sucks. Wear protection.
