struggling to understand why my life should be impacted in any way by the political whims of people outside of my specific watershed, let alone bioregion

@cthon1c
I can relate to losing fundamentals such as this. I could not remember for years why music or anything man-made really is such a hype in society that they constantly talk about it even visit places just to see what previous generations had made.

To answer your question:
Because your locality can't produce and maintain the knowledge needed to run civilisation in your neck of the woods. Let alone the goods necessary to run our tech civilisation, like glass testing vials, toilet paper, noodles, machines that make noodles, computers that make computers, mining and transport machinery for raw materials and food.
Not only does your area not have all the required raw materials, it also doesn't have the manpower needed to staff the education centres and factories.

Downgrading into a far less complex civilisation that works on resources in constrained areas like the state of North Carolina, Nigeria or Norway, like in the pre-industrial era, is nigh-impossible without unconscionable suffering.
And the knowledge relevant for such a new-old life organisation has vanished out of memory 3 to 4 generations ago in industrialised countries.

It sort of pertains to your question and my reply, why your "life should be impacted in any way by the political whims of people outside of my specific watershed, let alone bioregion".

He ends his talk about how bad its going to get with the sole prescription: "economic activity" like trade or transport is going to become de-globalised and survivors of civilisation crash will have to make do with what their small region can offer.
I agree.
And then, your life is no longer impacted by the political whims of a far-away region, outside your local watershed. Provided you personally survive the crash and the culling in the aftermath.
Knowledge of then-relevant stuff will be key to your survival. Not the bunker with shelves of food in Queenstown, New Zealand.
How can you help to make your neighbourhood's, your community's survival crash-proof today? Do it. 🙂
