BREAKING: 11,000 young South Carolinians won't be able to cast a ballot this year after a judge declined to fix an error that wrongfully denied the registrations of those who were 17-years-old when they registered but would be 18 by Election Day.-- Democracy Docket

@GottaLaff now I am so pissed - what the hell...
@aliza In our face suppression

@GottaLaff

They aren't even hiding it.

@GottaLaff
Also, the irony of "11,000 votes" is not lost.
@intothewestaway But not VAX 11/780 votes as in Georgia.

@oclsc

I PDP the fool who messes with democracy.

@GottaLaff Unacceptable. How awful. Their rights are being denied. Period.
@GottaLaff Wow. So blatant voter suppression.

@GottaLaff

I don't suppose there was ever a chance SC's 9EV could swing to D.

@WonkaBee @GottaLaff I guess there's less of a chance now.
@GottaLaff disenfranchisement in action. Time for quick appeal!
@sigsegv To whom? Trump's court?
@GottaLaff not trying only guarantees a loss. Maybe the ruling gets overturned on appeal and even survives the trip to SCOTUS.

@GottaLaff but, as a state issue, this would only go to the state level top court and not SCOTUS so is it even fair to say that Trump’s court would hear the case? (If I’m understanding jurisdiction)

I’m a little surprised to hear the defeatism coming from you. You’ve pushed back on me for similar negative thoughts and I thank you for that.

We need to keep up the fight. Push until we can’t. GOP want us to tire and quit.

Let’s not play by their rules.

@sigsegv Not defeatism, realism. It's South Carolina. And I never said NOT to appeal. I was suggesting the likelihood of getting a fair ruling might be low.

I've never quit in my life.

@GottaLaff ok. I interpreted your comment to imply that appeal is a waste of time. We’re on the same page.

@sigsegv Oh, never never. It’s NEVER a waste of time. I just don’t feel particularly optimistic about it.

Thank you.

@GottaLaff I assume most of them are now 18. Shouldn’t they be allowed to go register now????
@GottaLaff Democracy dies in broad daylight.
@GottaLaff WHAT??? I hope the lawyers are already on this!!!

@GottaLaff weird how the only electoral corruption seems to invariably be right shitstains denying the rights of people to vote. Especially when the same shitstains denying the constitutional right of these kids to register to vote, is 100% ok with these kids being forced to carry pregnancies.

Almost like the entire right wing is a bunch of rapists in waiting.

@PeasLuvnJustice I got it from @democracydocket ...just couldn't get it to load right.
@GottaLaff I'm sure Marc and his team will do everything in their power to appeal?? 🙏

@GottaLaff
I'm sure there will be many post election rulings that rights were violated. But, the vote that never occurred can't be counted.

Look at the case of 20,000 people tossed off the 2000 voter roll in Florida because they had names that were like felons.

W won by less than 600 votes

SC judge rules against fixing mistake, keeps eligible SC teens from voting in 2024

1,896 South Carolinians who thought they registered to vote at the Department of Motor Vehicles were never registered, according to the ACLU.

Yahoo News
@GottaLaff
I sure hope these 11,000 young adults file a class action. This is outrageous!
Hopefully the ACLU gets involved.
@GottaLaff Can they perhaps cast provisional ballots pending result of appeal?
@dalias @GottaLaff I wonder, is there some sort of penalty for willfully obstructing the votes of people?

@GottaLaff

In other news:
"Judge holds prayer vigil for his candidate, in hopes that he won't be held accountable."

@GottaLaff What judge? Surely a maga appointed fascist. South Carolina voters should revolt and not pay state taxes to insurrectionists.
@GottaLaff as a South Carolinian this sickens me. I demand answers as to why this happened.
@wil_from_online As a former Californian now in Canada, I do too

@GottaLaff @gerald where as in Australia the Electoral Commission contacts 17 year olds to make sure they register so that they can vote on their 18th birthday if need be.

The U.S. system is so weird.

@fraser @GottaLaff @gerald also, what is the role of a Department of Motor Vehicles (!) in this?
@tessarakt @fraser @GottaLaff @gerald
Many states (maybe all?) offer voter registration while getting your driver’s license-you’re proving your identity, address and possibly citizenship at the time, so it makes sense to streamline that. If you’re under 18 you are pre-registered. My daughter is 17 and will miss this election, but she’ll automatically become a registered voter at age 18, having done all her paperwork two years earlier.
@tessarakt @fraser @GottaLaff @gerald You can register to vote at the DMV with just a check box while you're getting your license. At least in my state.
@fraser @GottaLaff @gerald In Canada, when you file your taxes, there's a checkbox to confirm your information with Elections Canada. Before any election from municipal to federal, we get a form in the mail a month or more ahead of time.
It's SO SIMPLE!
@Mayor_of_Smartarse The right approach, but if the goal is to avoid a correct election, you deploy hundreds of obstacles.
@Mayor_of_Smartarse @fraser @GottaLaff @gerald USA is so manipulated and groomed, Gawd forbid you ? the norm.... Electoral college is total bs! Vote Blue 💙 for the free world.
@Mayor_of_Smartarse @fraser @GottaLaff @gerald
Registering to vote in many jurisdictions in the USA isn't hard because we don't know how to do it; it's hard because one of our political parties has abandoned democratic principles and is trying to prevent people from voting.
@VATVSLPR @fraser @GottaLaff @gerald And you don't have a national system that can't be interfered with. We don't get purged from a voter roll until we are dead and if we move, it changes location for us.
@Mayor_of_Smartarse @fraser @GottaLaff @gerald and you can vote by mail, in advance and at any voting location.

@fraser @GottaLaff @gerald The US was founded with principles of limiting the franchise. Initially it was limited to land owning men. Legally it has expanded repeatedly so it is now most adults. (Non Citizens, the legally incompetent, and some former or current prisoners are the only legal exclusions.)

Unfortunately one political viewpoint has benefited from the limited franchise, fights against any expansion, and makes concerted efforts to remove it from blocks of people.

@fraser @GottaLaff @gerald Not weird...just racist and classist, as it has always been.
@GottaLaff just for letting you know (I don't know how elections work over there) in most countries you can vote if you are 18 in voting day
@weqb Same here. That's why the ruling was so horrible.
