We have to build something new. What we have is not funded in a way that works in the public interest. Pro Publica is good, but as you point out, no national newsroom.
If we want that, /we/ have to fund it. Not advertisers. Not billionaires. The common (ish?) people.
@abhayakara @mattblaze @heidilifeldman
The Guardian sort of functions this way.
@heidilifeldman @mattblaze It is absolutely wild, the lengths some will go to curry favor with those who would never, ever. but never support them
The Venn diagram of "MAGA" and "people who might pay to subscribe to WaPo or the LA Times" is two discrete circles, one around WDC, the other around LA
@bnmng @heidilifeldman Sadly, I stopped donating to The Guardian because of this:
"The Guardian is an important source of news in English-language Europe, but continues its practice of platforming TERF rhetoric on a regular basis."
https://ngmx.com/@sindarina/110001922206762674
I wish I had a good recommendation beyond the often-mentioned Propublica and MotherJones, both of which I support.
OK, time to expand on this with a thread, and explain why The Guardian has been a platform for TERF rhetoric for many, many years, and why you shouldn't give them any money whatsoever until they acknowledge it as a problem, fix it, and then make amends. 1) Julie Bindel, who was a TERF before Twitter was a thing, still has a home there. Here's one of her screeds, from 2004; https://www.theguardian.com/world/2004/jan/31/gender.weekend7 #DontPayTheGuardian — This is an updated thread, since the earlier version on .lol, from mid-December of 2022, will disappear, and there's more information to add.
I cancelled a while ago. It was hard to give up some of the articles that I found illuminating and informative, but the bothsidesism eventually became too much.
I think you're in very good company.
I hated to do it, because my options for good reporting on national news are diminishing every day. But I just canceled my subscription to the Post.
So you've ended your WaPo subscription - good for you - and started subscribing to ProPublica - even better! - -
But have you stopped ordering from Amazon?
@heidilifeldman Good for you! If I had a subscription I'd do the same.
Of course it's Amazon we really need to cancel.
@heidilifeldman
I don't subscribe to WaPo or the LA Times, but i 💯 agree about the unless/until.
Supporting ProPublica (in additional to any reputable local media) looks like the best of all possible choices news-wise in these circumstances. So I'm also gonna do that. Thanks for the suggestion!
@heidilifeldman I haven't read an article by wapo or NY times in a few years now due to their misleading reporting. There are many other good sources of news that are less biased and more responsible.
