I hate giving up access to its WH and Congressional reporting but unless and until the editorial board is permitted to do its job and endorse a Presidential candidate in this Presidential election, I cannot, in good conscience, pay for the Washington Post. I’ll be sending the money to ProPublica.
@heidilifeldman We have so few broadly capable national newsrooms left, and I am truly hesitant to relflexively stop supporting good news orgs simply because I disagree, however strongly, with one editorial opinion or another. But this one is a bridge too far. I'll have to do without them.
@mattblaze @heidilifeldman more moral cowardice than having Bezos force them to endorce Trump. The silence of good people is necessary for evil to triumph.

@mattblaze @heidilifeldman

We have to build something new. What we have is not funded in a way that works in the public interest. Pro Publica is good, but as you point out, no national newsroom.

If we want that, /we/ have to fund it. Not advertisers. Not billionaires. The common (ish?) people.

@abhayakara @mattblaze @heidilifeldman

The Guardian sort of functions this way.

@zagone @mattblaze @heidilifeldman The Guardian is run by TERFs, unfortunately. This was a huge disappointment and made me question everything else they were writing. I still almost can’t believe it, but every time I check again I see evidence of it. :(
@mattblaze "Broadly culpable" seems to be the trend in newsrooms.
@gnate That's really not true or fair. The editorial page has nothing to do with the newsroom (in every major paper).
@mattblaze Thanks for bringing it back to reality. The lure of clever language is too strong....
@mattblaze I feel the same.

@heidilifeldman @mattblaze It is absolutely wild, the lengths some will go to curry favor with those who would never, ever. but never support them

The Venn diagram of "MAGA" and "people who might pay to subscribe to WaPo or the LA Times" is two discrete circles, one around WDC, the other around LA

@RufusJCooter @heidilifeldman @mattblaze I have been away from the news. I did not realize that both WaPo and the LA Times had made the same decision.
@mattblaze @heidilifeldman you could consider canceling Amazon Prime/not using Amazon. That would probably be more significant for Bezos.
@heidilifeldman I was thinking of cancelling my subscription in favor of The Guardian, though I'm interested in recommendations
@bnmng I am a member at the Guardian. In terms of newspapers I don’t have great suggestions. I’m considering looking into The Nation.
@heidilifeldman @bnmng Consider also the Texas Observer, and De Correspondent (Dutch). Plus al-Jazeera for what you're not being told.
@martinvermeer @heidilifeldman @bnmng Al Jazeera is for what you shouldn't believe.
@ArenaCops @heidilifeldman @bnmng They are *differently* unreliable - which is the point.

@bnmng @heidilifeldman Sadly, I stopped donating to The Guardian because of this:

"The Guardian is an important source of news in English-language Europe, but continues its practice of platforming TERF rhetoric on a regular basis."
https://ngmx.com/@sindarina/110001922206762674

I wish I had a good recommendation beyond the often-mentioned Propublica and MotherJones, both of which I support.

Sindarina, Edge Case Detective (@[email protected])

OK, time to expand on this with a thread, and explain why The Guardian has been a platform for TERF rhetoric for many, many years, and why you shouldn't give them any money whatsoever until they acknowledge it as a problem, fix it, and then make amends. 1) Julie Bindel, who was a TERF before Twitter was a thing, still has a home there. Here's one of her screeds, from 2004; https://www.theguardian.com/world/2004/jan/31/gender.weekend7 #DontPayTheGuardian — This is an updated thread, since the earlier version on .lol, from mid-December of 2022, will disappear, and there's more information to add.

@jeridansky @heidilifeldman Thank you Jeri, I'll check out that thread. I already support Mother Jones but not Propublica yet

@heidilifeldman

I cancelled a while ago. It was hard to give up some of the articles that I found illuminating and informative, but the bothsidesism eventually became too much.

@heidilifeldman Canceled. I'm sure there are probably more specialized outlets that can use the support I was giving the Post. I've been an occasional contributor to ProPublica and OpenSecrets - time to switch my #WaPo subscription $$ to journalists who demonstrate values I am not embarrassed by. The Post was convenient and, I thought, provided some balance but now I'm realizing how much its value has diminished. It will just take more effort to find journalists worth supporting.

@heidilifeldman

I hated to do it, because my options for good reporting on national news are diminishing every day. But I just canceled my subscription to the Post.

@heidilifeldman If I hadn't cancelled my WaPo sub over the summer after their hit job on Biden, I'd be cancelling it so hard right now. I'm sticking with the #PhiladelphiaInquirer and a couple of other local outlets and podcasts -- and of course, ProPublica which does amazing work.
@heidilifeldman That's what I did several months ago - NYT as well. I think I sent some to Propublica and some to @404mediaco

So you've ended your WaPo subscription - good for you - and started subscribing to ProPublica - even better! - -

But have you stopped ordering from Amazon?

@heidilifeldman

@heidilifeldman Good for you! If I had a subscription I'd do the same.

Of course it's Amazon we really need to cancel.

@heidilifeldman Democracy dies in silence. Thus ends 20 years of digital subscription.

@heidilifeldman
I don't subscribe to WaPo or the LA Times, but i 💯 agree about the unless/until.

Supporting ProPublica (in additional to any reputable local media) looks like the best of all possible choices news-wise in these circumstances. So I'm also gonna do that. Thanks for the suggestion!

@heidilifeldman I haven't read an article by wapo or NY times in a few years now due to their misleading reporting. There are many other good sources of news that are less biased and more responsible.
