Doing some thinking and printing today.

TIL The Print Shop for Apple IIe supports the ImageWriter II color ribbon! ๐Ÿ˜

Wonder if it will work to capture the output from Virtual ][ and redirect to my real ImageWriter II. Did The Print Shop ever support ImageWriter over AppleTalk?

#RetroComputing #VintageApple

Yes! I captured the output from the printer in Virtual ][ and then printed it to my ImageWriter II over AppleTalk with Netatalkโ€™s pap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Although I had to change some of the line feeds to carriage returns to get it to work right:

Made a banner in The Print Shop for the swap meet this Saturday in NJ. Who else is going?

#RetroComputing

If anyone coming to the VCF Swap Meet in NJ this Saturday is interested in a Macintosh IIx or Mac Quadra 950, get in touch with me! They're big and heavy so I'll only bring if someone wants them.

Update: Swap meet was a success! Thanks to all that attended!

Oh no, I forgot I had this โ€œCompu-Gloโ€ fluorescent tractor feed paper. I may have to print another one. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

@paulrickards That sound was before my time but i love hearing it still. Paper should be together like that too so u can easily make posters still.

edit: this clip makes me want to find one of these working printers on ebay now ๐Ÿ˜†

@paulrickards That type of paper is called "Endlospapier" in German, "endless paper".
@paulrickards who needs a drum machine when you have a dot matrix impact printer
@prokyonid I mean, a drum printer would be fun to have too ๐Ÿค”

@colin_mcmillen Hey thanks! DIP1-8 is currently off on my printer. I think the problem is upstream from the printer-- likely in the process from Virtual ][ printer emulation to saving to a file. All of CR and LF get converted to LF which caused each color to get printed on its own line. Just needed to swizzle them back.

Interestingly, the iwem PostScript preamble you found starts, but doesn't differentiate between CR and LF and no color.

@paulrickards I'm not sure IWEM did color, after all it was made to print to black and white LaserWriters

@colin_mcmillen Found out that if I set the variables AutoLF and CR+LF to false instead of true (the comments mention false was the original setting), I get a properly rendered image, obviously in black and white!

It might be possible to add color support but AFAIK PostScript doesn't support color transfer modes so you'd be stuck with the primaries CMYK.

@paulrickards oh yeah, with iwem i had set those back to the correct defaults.
One thing that seems wrong with Print Shop are the greeting cards, with half of them on the second half of the page. I think there should be something like reverse line feeds or something.
@paulrickards Where are you getting colour ink ribbons? Haven't seen them in decades!

@JustinDerrick I found these on eBay but they need lots of cleaning as the foam rollers inside disintegrate over time. I wrote a blog post about how to do it:

You can also get new ones that work out of the box from MacEffects:

ยป ImageWriter II Color Ribbon Fix

@paulrickards Magic! ๐ŸŒˆ
The Mac version definitely supports AppleTalk ImageWriters.
@paulrickards microM8 takes this to the next level and redirects Print Shop colour output to PDF: https://paleotronic.com/software/microm8/

microM8 is an enhanced Apple II and IIe emulator that allows you to play and "upcycle" classic 8-bit games using 3D graphics and more. microM8 is available to download for WIndows, macOS / OSX and Linux and it's free!

Paleotronic Magazine
@scruss Oh cool! That's the same as what I did here with Virtual ][, saving it as a PDF. Although I had to adjust the color transfer mode in Illustrator to make the colors come out right ๐Ÿ™ƒ
@paulrickards microM8 goes gloriously over the top with features: Apple Logo breaks out into 3D, complete with hardware acceleration on the host system
