We managed to get a vacation in this autumn after all! We've improved our financial situation enough to afford a trip up to the upper peninsula (UP) of Michigan for hiking around the Porcupine Mountains region.

And we lucked out for color! The red maples may be past their prime, but the sugar maples are filling the woods with bright yellows and fluorescent oranges.

Plus: SNOW! We knew it was going to get below freezing last night, but it persisted into the day with flurries and outright snow, especially at the higher altitudes in the Porcupine "Mountains".

While the palette was primarily yellow, there were still some brilliant reds left here and there!

A variety of vertical scenes from today's hike around Summit Peak at the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness, Michigan.

At the lower elevations the snow didn't stick around long, and we mostly hiked in drizzle. But we were dressed for it and it was a wonderful day for a hike even without the sun!

Snow cast the distant mounds of the Porcupine Mountains into a gray mist as seen from Summit Peak.

Pausing for a quiet moment at the side of a lake along out trail.
