Holy shit! English has an actual name to that elusive color that in Brazilian Portuguese we infomally call "cor-de-burro-quando-foge" (literally "the color of a donkey as he runs away" -- yes, I'm not making this up).

TAUPE (pron. "tope", rhymes with "hope")

From Wikipedia: "Taupe is a vague color term which may refer to almost any grayish brown or brownish gray, but true taupe is difficult to pinpoint as brown or gray."

AND this name is also derived from an animal! (it's French for "mole").

@hisham_hm FWIW, I've always pronounced this "tawp"

@rjek oh English :)

I got it from here (this guy is Canadian) https://youtube.com/shorts/Pad4li0elQQ?si=tPd564KYYuy4F42r

Wikipedia says "Taupe ( /ˈtoʊp/ TOHP)"

since my English pronunciation skews American-ish, I think I'll stick with that myself. But noted! At least now I'll know to come up with mental images of British donkeys on the run when I hear someone say tawp!

@rjek @hisham_hm
Me too! Tope was new to me, tawp sounds much more the thing. Probably because it's closer to the French pronunciation.
I do dressmaking, colour names come up a lot when you deal with fabrics. Or yarn for knitting.
I'd call it a grey that has a beigey tinge to it, but it's much nicer than beige.

@Giselle @rjek you're actually the third Brit who mentioned "tawp", so I think there might be some regional variation at play!

But as far as the French pronunciation goes, I believe it is actually closer to "tope"?

(Of course, that depends on how you pronounce "toe" vs. "taw"; come to think of it, British English says "oe" in a much more 'rounded' way than American or Canadian, so maybe the thing is that we differ on how to say "hope" πŸ˜‚ β€” ...oh English!)

@hisham_hm @rjek Phonetic spelling is challenging, isn't it. I was thinking of tope as rhyming with hope, the French clip is much closer to the tawp I was thinking of (the Brit way of saying it is longer, in French it's much shorter), so maybe it should be phonetically written as tawhp? The aw like in awesome.
It's all very intriguing! There definitely are regional variations.

Anyway, I was intrigued to see a discussion about this colour, it doesnt come up often. The donkey phrase is brilliant!

@hisham_hm "cor-de-burro-quando-foge" is kind of genius but i can see why you might want fewer syllables if it came up a lot...
@brennen It doesn't really (I mean, how often does "taupe" come up in your daily life? πŸ˜„) so yeah, it's a fun expression to make language more... colorful :)
@hisham_hm i was just racking my brain and i am pretty sure that i have literally never referred to anything as "taupe", unless _maybe_ it was described that way in a clothing catalog or something
@hisham_hm 🀣 that is SO much more descriptive than "tohpe"
@hisham_hm i had a jeep grand cherokee in toupe in like 2006! i had no idea it was ass colored :D
@hisham_hm it definitely rhymes with hope for me
@hisham_hm I've always thought of taupe as having a hint of blue/purple about it.
@hisham_hm now I need to learn to pronounce this in Portuguese because this is an excellent expression.
@hisham_hm i heard that brown is dark orange, if so then maybe this could also be called be dark grayish orange :)
@hisham_hm We had a car once that was listed as bronze, we always described it as "donkey brown" so it became the burro car.
