Suspect a large part of the future will be "AIsbestos Removal".

Asbestos was a wonder material which was going to revolutionise the world. Only then we discovered just how carcinogenic it was.

And now, every day, we have to gently unpick it from the urban environment.

How many companies will belatedly discover that a load-bearing process is actually riddled with AI? Then they'll have to pay to carefully remove it without any further environmental damage.

Hence AIsbestos.

@Edent Does it actually bear any loads yet? I've never seen such a great example of a solution in search of a problem.

So far, anyway. I imagine capitalism will give us a few more before I die.

Today? No.
Tomorrow? Maybe!
@Edent @denny When I read stuff like https://www.forbes.com/sites/marisagarcia/2024/02/19/what-air-canada-lost-in-remarkable-lying-ai-chatbot-case/, I have to wonder how long any instance of "load bearing" AI will last.
What Air Canada Lost In ‘Remarkable’ Lying AI Chatbot Case

The crux of the Air Canada case lay in a disagreement between the airline's chatbot and the airline’s Bereavement Fares Policy webpage.

@eanopolsky
It will last until the VC money runs out

@Edent Weird delayed double post here.
@Edent Unless that was a "tomorrow" joke 😉
@Edent Interesting analogy. Or it will be like mold spores. Present everywhere and safe . . . until it suddenly is not and you need to tear it all down and start over
@Edent Just cover it up with some cheap vinyl siding and pretend it isn't there.
@Edent @onepict To be load bearing, it has to do something useful well. Asbestos does, LLMs don't.
@Edent funny thing, even the Romans knew it was dodgy as they would never buy slaves who'd mined it.
@Edent my father was a lead construction engineer. Lost him due to asbestos 🖤 The dangers of that wonder material were known in the 70's, "but the economy". So politicians ignored it and didn't prohibit using it up until mid 90's. 30 years later,he developed lung cancer from it. I hope this doesn't repeat with AIsbestos. 😞

@Edent I'm not sure how many businesses are using it critically in processes--it hasn't been that long, so we're still in the early adopters and easy addition phase.

Now, all the useless AI content scattered around the web? That's gonna stick around for a while.

@Edent Sounds like regular developer stuff.
@Edent @clementd very good parallel, thanks for pointing it!
@Edent I love this term and this metaphor.
@Edent I like your take on the #AI madness of today.
@Edent took me a minute to grok this since i was reading it as “ALsbestos” hah
