Hey, I'm @knizer, most weeks I scour event listings, and compile a thread of what's interesting and near our home in #SomervilleMA. I see this project as a neighborly way to improve our part of the fediverse with useful tailored content, to draw interesting people like you out into the world - be social, enjoy the bounty of the metro region, you know? I'm happy to promote events you find, just give me a shout or use the #BostonWeekend tag yourself.

There's no algorithm or marketing budget, so if you find something cool, or general support this kind of thing and have followers in #NewEngland - please give a boost.

I hope you have a good Indigenous People's Day, be seeing you!

@knizer scene of a very exciting bit of Zodiac, my favorite Neal Stephenson novel (and no, it's not a doorstop)

@kdnyhan ha, still have my tpb copy which I suspect I bought and read last in the last century, well before I even considered moving to New England. Due for a re-read

If you're a Big Neal Stephenson Fan, though, did you see this auction from last year? https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2023/snow-crash

Snow Crash | 2023 | Sotheby's

Sotheby’s is excited to announce Snow Crash – an offering of physical and digital items connected to the revolutionary 1992 science fiction novel of the same name, with the majority of the lots being consigned by author Neal Stephenson, and artist Tony Sheeder, who collaborated with Stephenson on the Dioxin Posse graphic novel concept that provided the inspiration for Snow Crash. This sale also includes Infocalypse, an open edition collection of digital art created to mark the 30th anniversary of the book that coined the term "Metaverse."Listed among TIME Magazine’s Top 100 All-Time Novels written in English since 1923, this science fiction satire shaped the future of technology as we know it today. Published in 1992, Snow Crash is considered – along with William Gibson’s Neuromancer – as one of the pillars of the cyberpunk genre and one of the most important works of modern science fiction. The book is credited with coining the term “Metaverse” and popularizing the use of the term “avatar,” which James Cameron later cited as a primary inspiration in his work. Stephenson’s vision of a hyper-capitalist, post-national, arch-libertarian future might be fiction, but it anticipated – and could be said to have served as the source code for – much of our contemporary world, from the metaverse to cryptocurrency, mobile computing to augmented reality, and much more.Snow Crash focuses on the aptly named Hiro Protagonist, a katana-wielding computer hacker working as the “Deliverator” – i.e., a pizza delivery guy – who stumbles upon a plot to distribute the drug/virus/religion Snow Crash to every individual in both the real world and the Metaverse. Aided by a “Kourier” named Yours Truly, or Y.T. – the original character in the Dioxin Posse graphic novel – the duo work to take down the distributor of Snow Crash, the communications magnate and religious cult leader L. Bob Rife, and the assassin in his employ, the murderous Raven. From Stephenson’s original manuscript for Snow Crash, to the only surviving materials from the original graphic novel concept; to the original painting used as the cover art for the first paperback edition of the book; to an incredible, hand-forged one-of-a-kind tachi sword offered in a custom interactive tansu storage cabinet, designed and created by Wētā Workshop, the foremost maker of weapons, armour, costume and physical effects for films such as The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, King Kong, Blade Runner 2049, Avatar and many more, this sale tells the incredible story of one of the most groundbreaking and influential novels of the modern era.In addition to the physical items for auction in this sale, Sotheby’s is thrilled to present Infocalypse, an open edition collection of digital art, created as a collaboration between Tony Sheeder, the artist behind Dioxin Posse, artist and software developer Sterling Crispin, and author Neal Stephenson, to mark the 30th anniversary of the publication of Snow Crash. Composed of images designed for, or derived from, Dioxin Posse, the collection evokes the data-saturated dystopian setting and titular image of the novel.Effective February 1, 2023, Sotheby's has updated its terms and conditions for all categories globally excluding Wine Spirits.
