In this article, Ynet's editors chose to use the term "terrorism" in the headline (in quotes, supposedly quoting a grieving family member), in a report which describes the vandalism of military graves by two East Jerusalem teenagers (13). But the facts presented do not support the terrorism label at all. While authorities arrested the suspects, they were later released to house arrest, with some police sources indicating the incident was treated as juvenile misconduct rather than terrorism.

Why let such an easy clickbait go to waste?

This is the chronology established (matching earlier reports based on social media posts):

- On the evening before the Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv, #Maccabi (Israeli) fans were reported to have torn down and burned a Palestinian flag, shouted anti-Palestinian slogans, and vandalized a taxi.

- The following day, there were clashes between pro-Palestine protesters and Maccabi fans on Dam Square in Amsterdam.

- During and after the match, there were numerous attacks on Maccabi supporters across the city center. Footage showed masked youths targeting fans, with some allegedly asked if they were Jewish

- Five Maccabi fans were hospitalized and 20-30 others were slightly injured in the attacks.

[…] Verified social media videos show Maccabi fans setting off flares and fireworks, chanting in Hebrew “olé, olé, let the IDF win, we will fuck the Arabs”, and declaring that there were “no children” left in Gaza.

Who could have guessed? WAPO's "investigation" is somewhat superfluous; citizen journalists already showed Israeli soccer fans initiating the violence. There was no program and the violence was most certainly not planned.

Initial confrontations involved aggressive actions by some Maccabi Tel Aviv fans, such as damaging a taxi and tearing down a Palestinian flag. These actions, along with online messaging containing threats against Israeli fans, fueled retaliatory actions by some local residents. The inadequate police response in the city center also contributed significantly to the escalation of violence.

Terrorism according to Israeli media, #Ynet.

When not busy scavenging stories from social media about #antisemitism for their rolling coverage titled "wave of antisemitism" (mostly ultra-orthodox Jews complaining about not getting something they felt entitled to), Ynet is "reporting" (IDF briefings) about terrorist activities, including children and women throwing stones at unsuspecting, fragile soldiers who are left with no choice other than to “neutralize” them.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

The text in Hebrew says:

Fighters neutralized a female terrorist who was throwing stones in the Shomron, a knife was found in her possession.

IDF forces neutralized a female terrorist who was throwing stones at the Giti Avishar junction in Shomron. During the search, a knife was found in her possession.

This is not the definition of terrorist or terrorism. Yet Ynet is regularly choosing to use the term “מחבל" (terrorist) to describe Palestinians. The labeling of stone-throwing as terrorism and the individual as a terrorist represents a particular narrative about resistance activities in the occupied territories.​​​​​​​​​​​ The report also emphasizes that a knife was found in her possession after the fact, which serves to further justify the characterization and response.

Quoting an anonymous #IDF reservist: "What happened in Sde Teiman is no secret, but most Israelis don't know anything about it, even now, because the Israeli media has almost completely ignored it. This is also the reason I chose to be interviewed. Because Palestinians continue to exit our detention facilities in body bags, and most people around me haven't heard about it."

Two problems here. If right-wing bots are manipulating the comments section, Ynet moderators should block them, but the bigger issue is that this is incitement and hate speech. As someone who comments there regularly, I can confirm: any comment that challenges Israel or the IDF, or draws comparisons to Nazism, gets blocked and removed. They can and do moderate, albeit with a strong preference for incitement against Palestinians. This kind of content is allowed to stand, even when flagged for hate speech.

Everything about these news briefs smells of war crime porn: operational name, strike count, timeframe, the phrase “most significant blow” – it reads like a press release written to make mass killing sound like a logistics achievement. “100 targets in 10 minutes” is framed as a flex, not a horror. The kill capacity is presented as a performance metric, supposedly something to be impressed by rather than horrified at. What those targets contained is of course omitted because everyone knows Israel of course only ever targets “terrorists”.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
