Having my first "Empire" apple of the season just now. They typically are ready at the start of October. I think they are the best apple varietal.

#EmpireApples

@ottaross An Empire apple is better than a McIntosh (though no the macs of my childhood memories), but it's rating on the hilarious AppleRankings is pretty meh: https://applerankings.com/empire-apple-review/
Empire Apple Review - Apple Rankings by The Appleist Brian Frange

Review of the Empire Apple, a doe-eyed optimist with enough gumption to make it in New York despite its backwoods lineage.

@andykm @ottaross Beg to differ. I love Cortlands and Spies. Macs are good at this time of year, but through the winter lose their taste (probably picked green)

@lastoneout @ottaross Hey, everyone likes what they like. I'm just enjoying the reviews on Apple Rankings.

On Cortlands: "Aside from the striking white flesh and splash of tartness, there’s not much good that can be said about the damp hacky sack left outside a frat house all winter known as the Cortland Apple."

Cortland Apple Review - Apple Rankings by The Appleist Brian Frange

Review of another crapple from New York State, the Cortland. A McIntosh offspring damp hacky suck that is best avoided.

@andykm the site really likes Honeycrisp, which I thought was a bit boring. Pink Lady is well-rated. I see those locally and thought they were pretty good last year.
@lastoneout

@lastoneout @andykm I like Cortland a lot too.
When getting non-local I'm a fan of Fuji.

Surely we can all at least agree that #redDelicious are a big disappointment.

@andykm wow, crazy. Hadn't seen that site. I'll need to file a dispute!
@ottaross never seen that variety here! what do they taste like?
@elexia I find them a nice balance of tart and sweet, with a really pleasing crisp crunch. It's known as a 'lunchbox apple' cuz it doesn't bruise easily, which is nice.
@ottaross I always look forward to when the Egremont Russett is in season
@Rhevian sounds exotic, I'll watch for it
