When the heat is at its worst, Kyōtoites have always instinctively flocked to the Kamo riverbank at sundown to catch the evening breeze.
From Muromachi times it became popular to take supper on platforms erected along the river during the summer.
Nōryōyuka (納涼床) are a common sight during summertime. Stilted platforms extend from businesses flanking the river, stretching over the narrow Misosogi-gawa (みそそぎ川).
Guests, for an extra charge, can dine outside, though the chance of cooling down is slim until September.
When the evenings were a little warmer than this, Nao-san enjoyed a small picnic after work...soaking up the lively atmosphere on the streets and dining platforms above from the relative peace of the riverbank😊
