I shocked some Senate colleagues, with my speech about the dark history of the eugenics movement in Alberta. Vitally important context, to our debate on Bill S-250, a bill sponsored by my Senate colleague Yvonne Boyer, a Metis human rights lawyer who has spent years drawing attention to the issue of non-consensual sterilization of Indigenous women in Canada. https://youtu.be/DXYdhZ1ZqdY?si=Wu5k7Epl3WHQm0x3 #eugenics #cdnpoli #SenateofCanada #Alberta #Canada #ableg #abpoli #Famous5

@Paulatics a little history lesson is a good thing.
@Paulatics I just read about how approx 1/3 of Puerto Ricans were sterilized up until not that long ago because the US govt. thought there were too many. 😬
Eugenics and Reproductive Coercion in Puerto Rico - Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies

Starting in the 1950s, Puerto Rican women were coerced into sterilization and used as test subjects in developing the modern birth control pill. They were targeted primarily due to issues of eugenics and were not given much, if any, information about either

@Paulatics

I cannot express how overjoyed I am to hear about this bill! I hope it is only another step in the journey.

I have some conflicts re: wording, but I trust the legislators of Parliament will address them.

@Amgine Oh, we have already completely rewritten it in committee. The amendments don't show because they were just passed. But the amended bill looks radically different. If you listen through to the end of the speech, I explain the changes we made. (I did not the support the bill as originally drafted.)

@Paulatics

Excellent to hear! I will go back and listen all the way through. Looking forward to seeing the changes online!

@Paulatics This is great.

Quite amazed however that this wasn't already an illegal act in this country. Then remember oh yeah residential schools were a thing in this lifetime and I get sadshamebarrassed.. :/
