1/6 Currently leading a doctoral seminar in #socialsciences of religion, focusing on an #interdisciplinary approach to migration routes, and religion in Southern Europe. Sociological and political works are revealing fascinating patterns in the interplay of #religion , #identity , and #mobility - a new area for me.

In this seminar, we’re conducting an in-depth documentary study that reveals the complex dynamics between religious practices and “migrations routes” experiences. With a colleague of mine (theological approach), we're examining what the migration journey does to the lived religion for migrants (refugees, forced displacement…) and faith-based organizations (FBO).

(very few among a lot) Key findings: Religious practices evolve dynamically throughout the routes themselves. We're seeing how religion serves as both a coping mechanism and a framework for interpreting experiences “on the road”. Intriguing parallels / interdisciplinary encounters between migration routes and religious concepts like #pilgrimage or #exodus.

Another interesting aspect: the transformation of religious #spaces into places of #refuge, challenging traditional notions of sacred/profane boundaries. This raises questions about religious #hospitality and sometimes, civil #disobedience in the context of migration.

We're also examining how FBO navigate complex ethical terrain, balancing humanitarian aid with legal constraints and freedom of religion. Their invocation of "higher laws" or international rights presents a fascinating challenge to state-centric migration policies.

There's so much more to explore, for instance about recovered bodies and associated religious or spiritual rituals (perhaps in a future thread).
Question for fellow #researchers : How do you approach / do you have any suggestions about the methodological challenges of studying "religion in transit"?
