It is very easy to subvert/alter this ending, and there are many variants of it, but Happily Ever After remains popular, because rewarding the audience, trusting in their investment, has proven to be a strong factor in the

longevity and symbolic meaning of a given work. It can, however, be done poorly, when a story tries to fish out a happy ending, or interpret an ending as being happy without the backing of the rest of the narrative. When done well, however, it mirrors everything that came before it, allowing for reflection and the contemplation of the messages driving the story.
